Publisher's summary
In the fall of 1993, the quiet suburb of Harting Farms is shocked when children begin to vanish, and one is found dead near December Park - a great, sweeping expanse that is sunken below the streets and surrounded on three sides by vast woodlands, a place children believe is haunted. Newspapers call the abductor the Piper because he has come to lead children away, while kids whisper darker names for him in the school halls. Angelo Mazzone and his friends discover a link to the dead girl and take up the search for the killer, vowing to stop the Piper's reign of terror. Their teenage pledge becomes a journey of self-discovery and an odyssey into the darkness of their own hometown.

Four brand-new horror novellas all about books, stories, manuscripts—the written word has never had sharper teeth. In The Skin of Her Teeth, a cursed novel drives people to their deaths. A delivery job turns deadly in The Dark Brothers' Last Ride. In This Book Belongs to Olo, a lonely child has dangerous control over an usual pop-up book. A choose-your-own adventure game spirals into an uncanny reality in The Story. Full of creepy suspense, these collected novellas are perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay, Stephen King, and Joe Hill.

The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest. But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out.

For best-selling horror novelist Wilson Paventeau, the scariest novel of his career is the one he didn't write. It bears his name on the dust jacket and contains his bio near the end, but this enigmatic tome is not part of his oeuvre. And the most frightening thing about it may not be the tale between the covers, but the reason for its mysterious appearance in Paventeau's life.

Story
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

When Laurie was a little girl, she was forbidden to enter the room at the top of the stairs. It was one of many rules imposed by her cold, distant father. Now, in a final act of desperation, her father has exorcised his demons. But when Laurie returns to claim the estate with her husband and 10-year-old daughter, it's as if the past refuses to die. Gripping
December Park is a coming of age horror story. The friendship between the five boys in the story is so real and what they do to survive the serial killer makes for a gripping thriller that won’t let you go. There are a lot of parallels with Stephen King’s IT but the story is well told so I don’t mind.

Not a bad author, but the reader . . .
First, this seemed very similar in Spirit to Stand By Me. That isn’t to say he plagiarized, but if you liked that King story, you’ll like this one. Though it wasn’t the best book I’ve read this year, Malfi is a competent of a storyteller that I will try another novel.
The reader chose odd places to take a breath. It was very evident the first two hours. Perhaps I became accustomed to it. I found the readers voice to be irritating, but that is a person preference and no comment on his characterization. After 10 hours I gave in and tried to relax, but I never got used to it.
Listen to a short bit of the novel to see how you feel. I did like the story.

December park: go visit it one day
Decent suspense novel. Takes a while to build up and feels a bit longish at points. The ending was a total surprise to me - didn't see that coming. The narrator is ok although felt monotonous at points too. Generally, I struggled through the initial 10-15 chapters but then the narration caught up with me and I felt compelled to finish it.

It's an amazing, heart-wrenching story. I found myself in tears by the end of it. Very well written and as embarrassed as I am to say I am just now discovering the works of Mafli, I am excited to read and listen to more of his books.
