About this listen

Perfect for fans of Stephen King's IT, a group of friends return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they first stumbled on as teenagers in this mesmerizing odyssey of terror.

An atmospheric, haunting thriller, full of memorable characters and sublime terror, from the author of Come with Me

For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together.

Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood. In the light of new danger, they must confront their past by facing their futures, and hunting down a man who may very well be a monster.

Stephen King meets Neil Gaiman

My first listen of a Ronald Malfi book. An excellent performance by the reader along with a well paced story make for an excellent listen. My attention was held throughout and there were points where I was legitimately uncomfortable. The climax was a little difficult to follow and was definitely a very different feel from the rest of the book, but overall I plan on listening to more books by the author.

Good book.

Other than an aggressively large amount of swear words, this was a really good book. I enjoyed it.

Excellent!

This book was phenomenal! Malfi is quickly becoming one of my top favorite authors. Dennis was one of my favorite characters. I just loved this story so much.

Power of Evil

Childhood memories can haunt us forever and abusers and the supernatural can have a negative impact on our future... this is such a story.

Not a bad book, but to compare it to Stephen kings it was a stretch

It’s a good book, at times a little frustrating just how he treats his brother Dennis but it was worth the credit

So much fun! Stephen King vibes and I simply couldn’t stop listening

I very much enjoyed this. The storyteller was wonderful! The story itself screamed to Stephen King and gave those a really awesome old-school, psychological and mystical fairytale vibes do you recommend it.

A Modern Day Coming of Age Story Too Good to Pass

I have enjoyed reading Ronald Malfi for a few years now and this may be my favorite. "Black Mouth" follows four childhood friends who each experienced trauma and barely made it to adulthood with more than scars of their past. Four Black Mouth kids - Mia, Clay and twins Jamie and Dennis - come back together to face the likelihood that an entity from their past has come back. The Magician was a supernatural being living in the woods of Black Mouth who masqueraded as a carnival magician. In reality, he manipulates children into doing horrible things.

This is a story of overcoming loss, facing fears and the power of friendships forged during the magic realm of childhood. Monsters can be both real and imagined. Both are in full force in this story. Joe Hempel does an excellent job of voicing the whole cast. Although there are trappings of King's "It" as well as "Summer of Night" by Dan Simmons and maybe a little of "Boys Life" by Robert McCammon. Black Mouth is darker and happy endings are not part of the plot. But it is rewarding.

I don't understand the hype

It was a nice little story but that's all. But I'm also a person that likes a story that moves. In my opinion the story just didn't have any big moments, or twists, or anticipation that makes your heart anxious, or anything like that. It had interesting parts here and there but nothing to make a fuss over. This is the only book I've read from this author and since so many people say it's one of the best books this author has written, I probably won't read anything else from them if this is as good as it gets.

Dark and interesting.

If you like Stephen King and IT you will love this.
It has a very “Stranger Things” feel too.

Likely my favorite Malfi of them all

Fantastic narration and a damn good storyline. Audible is making me lengthen my review so now I’m just rambling.
