About this listen

When criminals are convicted, they go to jail. When they have parahuman abilities, they go to Deep Six, the most secure prison facility in the world. Six thousand feet underground, nobody has ever escaped from the maximum security facility.

Until now.

A parahuman terrorist called Misrule engineers a mass breakout, and it falls to a pair of prison guards to stop the world's most dangerous criminals from reaching freedom. Just Cause won't be able to help them. Despite being overmatched and underpowered, the two guards must find a way to prevent the escapees from their ultimate goal.

Good premise

So this is a good book don’t get me wrong but some parts struggle. This is a good book for when you are driving. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

How have I missed this series?

This is the 4th novel in the just cause universe and is my first read into it. I LOVED it!! The story and characters are great and the narration is spot on. The story is a society populated with supers, heroes and villains alike as well as many z listers, people whose powers are so insignificant that they barely count as powers. So how do you house these super villains when captured? The answer I Deep Six. A prison whose tech is based of the powers of the warden who can dampen the power of anyone. Each cell design tailored to its villain. All the guards are supers of no consequence, fire from fingertips of about birthday candle length, flight but only about 6inches off the ground, invisibility (sort of, just turning semi transparent). The story? A major villain turned himself in as he died of cancer. The catch? It’s a staged breakout to create a new terrorist funded super villain strike team to wreak havoc on the free world. The job is made possible by an insider so be careful who you trust. Who can stop the breakout? A few 100 tons of rock, a last line nuclear bomb, a super hero team, or just a handful of guards with low level powers. They are in for one helluva ride. Die Hard in the Superhero's Universe!

I received a free copy in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. There, that explains why I most happily chose a genre that I'm unfamiliar with, and I'm quite delighted to have dived into this book!
While I thought the superheroes were a bit of a feckless lot (Couldn't negotiate strongly, had a tendency of being overcome by gases then required very special doses of something to bring them back to consciousness), I was very happy with our heroine, Katie, who baaaarely has a super-power (her fingertips sprout itty bitty flames) but who uses that power incredibly well when everything hits the fan. And she and a fellow Corrections Officer, who also has an almost power, use what they have on hand with cutting intelligence to great effect whilst behind enemy lines, ala Die Hard. It's pretty fun.
The greatest weakness was Leslie Howard's narration. I listened to the sample long and hard, and even though her tones are quite whispery and feathery, I thought I could handle it. Alas, for two-thirds of the book, such tones are maintained, and she makes no distinction between characters which kinda throws off their dialogue, especially when Healy throws in clever bantering. Throws the fun off. But, and this I wipe my brow with relief, she revs it up for the final third of the book, and when our super-villain bellows, Howard bellows. When a character whines, she whines. It jazzes the ending up, and we're privy to the drama as the drama unfolds in a quick-paced fashion.
I don't know that the superheroes were good enough for me to seek more of the Just Cause Universe, but Katie and her cohort made this a fine and fun stand-alone book. After all, I listened to it in a single day, couldn't put it down because she's so clever, and the stakes were high!
Misrule was a clever and heartless villain, and Katie was a sharp-witted woman full of heart: a great match in a book!

Just plain fun

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was an interesting "spin off" in the series. This one focuses more on this prison and the two guards than on anything from the previous books. Not a bad thing, just an observation. I thought this book was just as fun and entertaining as the others. All in all, this is just good fun.

5 Stars Just Cause I Love This Series!!!

I keep thinking this series can't get any better and then I listen to the next book and think OMG that is the best!! As with the other books in this series Deep Six is action packed with such descriptive world building you can see the action taking place. I really love the originality of the powers in this series - my fave in this book is etched man, I hope there is a book telling his story because I find his abilities fascinating and would live to know how they came about. The narrator does a marvelous job bringing these characters to life with great pacing and inflection. This can be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading the others to get the full story. I look forward to more in this series and from this author.

Excellent!

This is an excellent super hero/super villain story. I have not listened to any others in the series, but it works as a stand alone and I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything. Basically there is a supermax prison just for parahuman bad guys and the baddest of the bad is caught and sent there, with a plan. Parahumans are like x-men all with different powers of various strengths from impenetrable skin to going sorta invisible. A breakout ensues and we follow the various characters as they try to contain it and survive. I love Katie and Foster and I hope they make an appearance in more books! Lots of action and wonderfully narrated! I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

How to stop a Prison break

Every good comic book has one. The place to stash the bad guys just beaten by the hero. Arkham, The Raft, The Phantom Zone. And of course, they always break out. So how would you feel if you were a prison guard tasked with keeping a lid on all the most diabolical beings in the galaxy who are infinitely more powerful than you? At times a comedy, at times all action, this was a great story to add to the Just Cause Universe. If you have swung with Spiderman or flown with Superman you'll enjoy this book. If you have to come into the series anywhere other than the beginning this is a good place to do so. I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review

Each book in the series gets better.

This was the fourth Just Cause novel I have listened to, and it was the best so far. A well developed villain and human protagonists couched the action with some emotional depth. I can't wait for the next one.

Better then I expected.

Was surprised how well done this Book is considering the premise and variety of characters.

The Audio Book had a good performance by the Narrator who helped the Book come alive.

The Writer did much more with this story then I thought possible.
