About this listen

"My house is a mess, my underwear is mixing with hers in the laundry, and my safe, quiet haven now smells of burnt candles and her."

Indy

Being the founder of a non-profit and keeping it going is my only focus right now. I don't have time for distraction–men, my health, my friends–all of it takes a back seat to me keeping this going. I've lived by other people's rules for too long, I am ready to break out on my own, and I'll prove to everyone I can do it. The Crown Project helps sick children and their families find some happiness during hard times, and I am committed to making it happen. If I can't have my own, I'll give someone else a fairytale. The only man I'd want is off-limits to me anyway. He's the meanest, grumpiest, and, unfortunately, the sexiest man I know. He also works with my brother. So there's that. I'll always be a supporting character, never the princess. My life just won't let me. It's impossible.

Derek

Without routine and order, the only thing left is chaos. Chaos leaves room for disorder and unhappiness. And that leads to betrayal. Never again will I allow that to happen. I am steady, focused, and at the top of my game as a tattoo artist at Hel's Ink. I am established, successful, and there is nothing that happens in my life that I don't allow. And then there is Indy. She is inescapable - a whirlwind of kindness and beauty and goodness. Everything about her is impossible. Left with no choice but to help her out of a challenging situation. I soon regret my decision and the insanity that comes with it. I let her in. Into my home and my life. But never– never- into my heart. There's no such thing as fairytales, and love stories don't really exist. But when everything changes, I wonder if maybe I've found a little piece of chaos I can live with.

This one shot right through my heart!!

Story - ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Spice - 🌶 🌶 🌶
Narration - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Derek is book #4 in the Hel's Ink series and maybe my favorite. While this story deals with serious issues, I found myself laughing at all the banter between the main characters, the Hel's ink family, and Derek's family in Virginia. My wheel of emotions definitely went around full circle. Derek was burned in his past by his ex-wife and best friend and vowed to never get close enough to anyone to get hurt again. Indie fights her inner "darkness" to not feel like a burden to everyone while trying to fully function with Multiple Sclerosis. There is darkness to this story, lightness to this story, and eventually some super smoking spice. And yes, we get all the Hel's Ink family involved with this story, too. This is an age-gap, grumpy/sunshine standalone, but this series is definitely best read in order. I sure hope there will be stories on Derek's family...those boys are hilarious!

The narration was fantastic. Joe Arden and Mollie Stark were perfect to voice Derek (grumpy, broody loner) and Indie (sunshine, thoughtful and caring). 5/5 stars!

Tremendous

I loved the book when I read it but the audio takes it to a whole new level. Joe as Derek was perfection and Mollie was amazing. I hope she gets to narrate Stevie. Her voices were spot on.

An Absolute Must Listen!

Derek is the fourth audiobook in DJ Krimmer’s amazing Hel’s Ink series, and I honestly could not have loved it more! I’ve been anxiously waiting for Derek and Indy’s story, and it certainly did not disappoint. I love a seemingly cold and broody MC who you just know has so much more going on deep down. And Derek definitely had a lot going on, dealing with a past devastating betrayal and heartbreak, anger issues, anxiety, and even OCD. He’s determined not to let anyone get close to him, and he heavily relies on structure and routine to keep his life together. Enter Indy, who blows through his carefully constructed life like a hurricane of sunshine and chaos. She’s fiercely independent despite her battle with MS and hates nothing more than having to ask for help, even when she desperately needs it. These two need each other more than either of them care to admit. And when they’re thrown together, sparks definitely fly and their chemistry is way too hot to handle. They just need to overcome their own stubbornness, and watching them eventually give in is an absolute joy

The duet narration for this story is provided by Joe Arden and Mollie Stark, who both hit it out of the park with their performances! Joe Arden’s slow, southern drawl and raw emotion bring so much life to the character of Derek, and you can’t help but feel every emotion right down to your core. And Mollie Stark brings a beautiful honesty to the character of Indy, flawlessly portraying her vulnerability as well as her strength and capturing the absolute sunshine that is Indy. The outstanding narration and engaging storyline make this an absolute must listen!

Amazing!

I can’t rant and rave enough about the Hel’s Ink series and just when I don’t think that the next book can be topped, well here comes the quiet loner Derek.

Derek is the man every women dreams of but only one women can break and that is Ashes little sister, Indiana Johnson.

I’m not going to give spoilers, this book is one you need to enjoy so you can capture the emotions these two characters experience, all the while giving reader to fully comprehend and appreciate the realities and hardships it is to be in a relationship with a person suffering from a debilitating illness. Also just really touching on the depression and the strength it takes from not giving in or up.

I love these books, totally worth the read for the laughs, the tears, the happiness and the sadness,

This series keeps getting better

Fourth in the series and stands alone quite well, you get to see others that have come before, but are never overwhelmed with info. There have been appearances by our main characters in previous books, so going back would give more foundation and allow for a greater payoff on their HEA.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, my heart just aches for every single character that DJ Krimmer introduces us to. When we get the stories behind why they are the way they are, what past events or injuries or emotional scars have formed the whole person, it just makes me want to cuddle them and never let them hurt ever again.

Derek is grumpy AF and Indy is positivity personified, but both are masks that hide emotional baggage. The way Indy goes out of her way to not be a bother or a burden hurts my heart. She has a very intense, and inconsistent, disability in her MS, but she pushes through every day trying to be what everyone else needs in a way that still allows her to feel like she's valuable. The way that Derek wants to take care of her without admitting he cares FOR her... these two took a long time to come together but once they do, it's so rewarding.

The audiobook was performed in duet style by Mollie Stark and Joe Arden. They performed these roles so well. I love an audiobook that can break my mask and make me react. From giggles and laughs, to tears multiple times, to talking back to the characters when they needed a dose of reality, this story and the voices performing it made me react. I wanted to do it all over again when I finished.

I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.

Genius Narration

Not only did DJ Krimmer write such a tender amazing heartfelt story, but the narrators performed the hell out of it. I’m new to Mollie Stark, but I’m definitely checking out the rest of her catalog…because she was the PERFECT Indy! Her and Joe played so well off each other, which made this audiobook a 10 out of 10 for me 5⭐️ all around 👏🏼. Honestly this whole series is great!!!

Derek for the win of favorite Hel's Ink men!!!

New to me narrator Molly Stark was simply phenomenal. I enjoyed all the different voices she had for each of the female characters. She should honestly take a bow because her performance is that great.

Then there is Joe Arden that gave Derek the perfect twang to his voice (the character is from West Virginia). He handles Derek's panic/rant moments so well too. To hear his voice go from a tone that says "leave me alone" to the soft and caring tone he has for Indy...beautiful!

I continue to be blown away by Ms. Krimmer's writing skill. Each book in this series gets better and better. They are so real, raw, and sometimes extremely relatable. Derek and Indy are no exception.

It isn't often I feel like I relate to the MMC but I relate to Derek so much with all of his quirks and I think that is one of the reasons he quickly became my favorite. He is so orderly and disciplined in his daily life and more on the loner side, by choice. Clearly he needed someone to come in and wreck havoc on his life and who better than Indy with her sunny personality. Indy is the epitome of sunshine and roses. Almost nothing gets that girl down and seeing the way grumpy Derek is with her had my heart so dang full of happiness. He sees her, it takes a hot minute for him to get there but he eventually does.

I love a good grumpy/sunshine book and I do believe this one just took the top spot. Everything about Derek and Indy is perfection. Their is an age gap of around 20 years but honestly it doesn't feel like that unless specifically mentioned. Many times I was so engrossed in the story that fact was forgotten. Derek is Indy's perfect person.
