About this listen

“They say I fell among thieves….I’ve fallen among saints as well.”

John Hare lies dying in the desert until he is discovered and saved by the kind and generous rancher, August Naab. As Hare is nursed back to health on Naab’s ranch, he finds himself irresistibly attracted to Naab’s adopted daughter, Mescal. But Mescal is being relentlessly pursued by Holderness, a man who is not to be trusted. Hare is soon drawn into a web of adventure and intrigue over land, water, and the heart of a beautiful woman, all set against the sweeping backdrop of the Wild West.

Editorial reviews

Zane Grey, with his popular adventure novels, has helped craft our image of the American frontier as much as anyone. But it is this performance of Grey's Desert Heritage, by award-winning narrator B. J. Harrison, that really brings the wild west to life. With an incredible commitment to the whole cast of characters, Harrison takes listeners from the desert, where rancher August Naab comes upon a dying John Hare, to the Naab's ranch where the temptation of love and land ignite a slew of adventures.

My First Zane Grey Book

Great story to relax to, especially for this with a love for the beauty of the desert.

One of Zane Grey's Best!

This is the 6th Zane Grey western I've read or listened to. I have enjoyed them all, but this is my favorite so far. Like his other novels, this contains drama, conflict between good and evil, and a love story--all set against the aura of the old West. B. J. Harrison is my favorite Audible narrator, and as always, he does a superb job. He is amazing at being able to create so many different voices to match the different characters.

By way of note: The first Zane Grey novel I listened to was Riders of the Purple Sage. In that novel, he portrays the Mormons in an almost slanderous fashion. (I am not a Mormon myself.) So I was quite surprised to find that in this novel, he presents them in a mainly positive light. Desert Heritage was his first western novel, and Riders of the Purple Sage was written later. I'm not sure what caused the radical shift in his viewpoint.
