About this listen

A woman ahead of her time, Mary Breydon knew how to get things done. Raised on a Virginia plantation, she learned how to care for livestock, respect her workers, and keep good books. But after her husband is killed, Mary must provide for her young daughter by running a stage coach station on the Cherokee Trail. With the help of an Irish maid and a mysterious stranger, Mary faces challenges that even the men eagerly anticipating her failure would have a difficult time overcoming. After firing the previous station manager with the aid of a bullwhip, she must track down stolen horses, care for a wayward boy, and defend against Indians. If that wasn’t enough, she also has to protect herself from the man who murdered her husband—and is coming for Mary next.

An old stagecoach trail,

The people reading the book were excellent! The characters became alive! I listened to the book twice, because it was set in the area that we live in. This book rates as one of the best stories that Louis Lamour has written. I favour the books written about earlier times in the old west. My wife’s grandfather homesteaded a ranch in Wyoming, I walked in the path that the stagecoach had left, eroded with time.

Good story

Mary takes over a western stagecoach station when her husband is murdered. She has a little girl. Set during the Civil War, but the West is removed from the fighting.

The need to earn a living necessitated taking on this job, but it is a mistake for women to think they need to compete with men. Each gender has strengths and weaknesses and they should not try to be an imitation of the other gender, but be the best they can be with who they are. Mary takes on an Irish maid and a young boy in need of jobs and she makes them into a "family". She is smart and hardworking and makes a go of the station with cleanliness and good cooking. Plans for a vegetable garden.

She does make mistakes in needlessly risking her life. It would be smarter to let the men loyal to her take the risks in fighting other men.

Funny episode with the Irish maid feeding the children of visiting Indians.

Another great story

If you love reading Louis l’Amour, you will love reading this book. This is another great story with a female as the heroine. I could read Louis l’Amour all day every day for a good summer vacation. This is another good story.

Love this book!

Just another example of why Louis L’ Amour is my favorite author.
This books one of a few that a woman is the lead character. I love the way he tells and writes his stories! It’s just absolutely amazing!

Vintage L'Amour. I vouch for the accuracy of the setting, having traveled it by car

Laramie and the Overland Trail can still be seen. "Strong women" appeared under the conditions described. It should be noted that Wyoming was the first state to grant the vote to women. The accurate detail of the stage station, and the character of Temple Boone are, again, vintage L"Amour.

My wife's favorite Louis L'Amour's Story

Having Cherokee grandmothers and Irish Grandfathers we always loved L'Amour stories as they were so authentic to the stories we heard about our great grandmothers and great grandfathers on our grandmothers sides of our family . Of course we knew those stories before we ever heard of Louis L'Amour and yet 25 years later when we were first recommended to read his books we did so with many questions in our minds. It wasn't long before we owned every book we could find, and then started buying cassette tapes and then CD's. He is so accurate that we have never had reason to question his work. We still discuss his books at family reunions in East Tennessee with our elders that are in their 80', 90', and over 100, as we are only early 70's we defer to our elders as we were taught as we grew up. We never correct them, even if we think they are wrong! Unlike grand children and our great grandchildren of today who correct you immediately whether they have a clue what they are talking about or not, the GOOD OLE DAYS are over, I am afraid!
