About this listen

This updated and expanded edition considers the continuing dismal employment statistics for individuals with ASD. The authors take an in-depth look at entrepreneurship. Using real-life examples, they point out that many of the unique characteristics of individuals on the autism spectrum lend themselves well to entrepreneurial ventures.

The book explores many unnoticed aspects of vocational rehabilitation programs that provide job training and placement for people with disabilities, as well as Social Security Administration programs that offer vocational assistance. Employment figures and prospects have been updated, and new jobs have been added that are well suited for those on the spectrum.

First off, I would like to say I am deeply appreciative of any Individual who offers assistance to parents of and autistic individuals. This book has very solid information and good ideas. I received this as a companion to the updated physical copy (which I have not received so I’m unable to compare). Here are the drawbacks of the audiobook as I see it: while the narrator is very good at speaking and annunciation, it very much felt like one of the computer assistant Siri style voices reading the text. The end of the book focuses on numerous individuals and the attributes and paths they recommend for a particular job. All of the information is amazing, but if you don’t feel you or your child is a good fit it won’t apply. I sped up the narration 1.4x at this point so I would not miss anything I might want to hear and was surprised at how much better I took to it. It gave it a more natural conversational rhythm to me. Also, I don’t know if the printed version will update this, but this was penned roughly 15 years ago so some of the information is dated. For instance, when discussing HVAC careers there is talk about developing programs that fit with the burgeoning technology of cell phones. All in all I would recommend the book despite my issues and appreciate it’s existence.

Highly recommend this book! Temple Grandin is an absolute genius on how to bring out the best in those who are not “neuro-typical”.

Brilliant advice!
