About this listen
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
WINNER OF THE NAUTILUS GOLD AWARD
“A powerful and provocative testament to the diverse coalition of minds we’ll need to face the mounting challenges of the twenty-first century.”—Steve Silberman
“An absolute eye-opener.”—Frans de Waal
A landmark book that reveals, celebrates, and advocates for the special minds and contributions of visual thinkers
A quarter of a century after her memoir, Thinking in Pictures, forever changed how the world understood autism, Temple Grandin—“an anthropologist on Mars,” as Oliver Sacks dubbed her—transforms our awareness of the different ways our brains are wired. Do you have a keen sense of direction, a love of puzzles, the ability to assemble furniture without crying? You are likely a visual thinker.
With her genius for demystifying science, Grandin draws on cutting-edge research to take us inside visual thinking. Visual thinkers constitute a far greater proportion of the population than previously believed, she reveals, and a more varied one, from the photo-realistic “object visualizers” like Grandin herself, with their intuitive knack for design and problem solving, to the abstract, mathematically inclined “visual spatial” thinkers who excel in pattern recognition and systemic thinking. She also makes us understand how a world increasingly geared to the verbal tends to sideline visual thinkers, screening them out at school and passing over them in the workplace. Rather than continuing to waste their singular gifts, driving a collective loss in productivity and innovation, Grandin proposes new approaches to educating, parenting, employing, and collaborating with visual thinkers. In a highly competitive world, this important book helps us see, we need every mind on board.

What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. Story
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel.

Garcia began writing about autism because he was frustrated by the media’s coverage of it; the myths that the disorder is caused by vaccines, the narrow portrayals of autistic people as white men working in Silicon Valley. His own life as an autistic person didn’t look anything like that.

At a time when Steve Jobs was only a teenager and Mark Zuckerberg wasn't even born, a group of visionary engineers and designers - some of them only high school students - in the late 1960s and 1970s created a computer system called PLATO, which was not only years but light-years ahead in experimenting with how people would learn, engage, communicate, and play through connected computers.

Story
Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how close we come to it or how far we deviate from it. The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don't even question it. That assumption, says Harvard's Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

Claude Shannon was a tinkerer, a playful wunderkind, a groundbreaking polymath, and a digital pioneer whose insights made the Information Age possible. He constructed fire-breathing trumpets and customized unicycles, outfoxed Vegas casinos, and built juggling robots, but he also wrote the seminal text of the Digital Revolution. That work allowed scientists to measure and manipulate information as objectively as any physical object. His work gave mathematicians and engineers the tools to bring that world to pass.

Story
Consciousness is our gateway to experience: it enables us to recognize Van Gogh’s starry skies, be enraptured by Beethoven’s Fifth, and stand in awe of a snowcapped mountain. Yet consciousness is subjective, personal, and famously difficult to examine: philosophers have for centuries declared this mental entity so mysterious as to be impenetrable to science. In The Ravenous Brain, neuroscientist Daniel Bor departs sharply from this historical view, and proposes a new model for how consciousness works.

In this thought-provoking exploration, Matthew May defines elegance as the elusive combination of unusual simplicity and surprising power, and pinpoints the four key elements that characterize it: seduction, subtraction, symmetry, and sustainability. In a story-driven narrative that sheds light on the need for elegance in design, engineering, physics, art, urban planning, sports, and work, May offers a surprising array of stories that illustrate why what's "not there" often matters more than what is.

In Ungifted, cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman - who was relegated to special education as a child - sets out to show that the way we interpret traditional metrics of intelligence is misguided. Kaufman explores the latest research in genetics and neuroscience, as well as evolutionary, developmental, social, positive, and cognitive psychology, to challenge the conventional wisdom about the childhood predictors of adult success. He reveals that there are many paths to greatness, and argues for a more holistic approach to achievement that takes into account each young person’s personal goals, individual psychology, and developmental trajectory.

Yet the gifts and talents of some of our most brilliant kids may never be recognized because these children fall into a group known as twice exceptional, or "2e". Twice exceptional kids are both gifted and diagnosed with a disability - often ADHD or an autism spectrum disorder - leading teachers and parents to overlook the child's talents and focus solely on his weaknesses.

lost visual thinkin, due 2 a TBI Unfathomable loss
I lost my visual thinking on impact. The loss was and is unfathomable. My world disappeared. It hasn't returned after 5 years. It's been an unimaginable experience. It's also taught me about resilience. My visual thinking never has returned.
I had to learn empathy and emotions again. So much was gone but here I am.
I had to learn to manage my temper, that was very hard.
I had no sense of self.
86% of people in prisons had a brain injury. We need to monitor and offer people with TBI's the care they need. It's easy to imagine being incarcerated due to being completely over whelmed from the multi faceted symptoms a TBI can confront you with. No rest, no days off from the stress of a TBI and trying to manage daily life.

Words are very unnecessary.
I struggle to find the words to express why I know this book is important. I suppose why is the answer you will find if you take this in. I can’t thank you enough for deciding to write this book.
The visual thinkers will be happy to understand more about themselves. The verbal, maybe more empathic to those who have speak in salad or analogy.
Enjoy!

Extremely important book. Who has changed more lives than Temple?
This changes everything.
Thank you Temple for all you have learned and shared with us. The cost must be great. Hopefully we will learn and grow.
How incredibly brave to call out major corporations and US Corporatacracy in general. Temples, bravery, mind and heart are very moving.

A good mix with the narrators
I heard an interview with Dr. Grandin where I found out about her new book and her great concern over the loss of skilled persons to maintain the infrastructure. I listened to the book off and on, and it was enjoyable.
Dr. Grandin's actual voice is in small parts, in the beginning and the end. I don't think several hours of her gruff manner of speaking would be as enjoyable. The professional narrator did a very fine job.
I strongly agree with Dr. Grandin regarding skilled trades. There were areas of the book where I was more skeptical but this is her book and she's putting forth her ideas.

Accurate representation
A must read /listen for everyone. If more people understood why visual thinkers are so important in our world it would be a better place. Dr. Grandin clearly explains this so that fully visual, partially visual (mixed) and non visual (verbal) thinkers can easily understand the concepts presented.

Makes you think!
I believe that animals really do act like humans and that visual thinkers have a special way of figuring things out. I like That she takes into consideration previously beliefs and studies And created her own experiments.
