About this listen

Nnenna Delahaye, a fearsome pirate captain with a particular taste for Fleet ships, lives according to no law except her own until she discovers a most unusual treasure in the belly of her most recent Fleet capture: a young girl. Against her better judgment (and the wishes of her first mate), she takes the girl on as a passenger. When Nnenna learns the girl has an artifact that the Fleet is desperate to get their hands on, she vows to do everything in her power to stop them.

Duty and honor have been Lu Ortega's creed since the day he joined the Fleet. Now that he has finally achieved the rank of Captain, he is eager to prove himself worthy of the honor. Lu accepts a mission to retrieve the missing girl and help to bring about the Fleet's great destiny.

What begins as a game of cat and mouse over land and sea quickly becomes a race to unlock an ancient secret with divine consequences.

Compelling story, stellar performance

Devil of the deep is unlike any other fantasy I've read. The world is huge and the characters are so genuine. This feels like the beginning to an epic world

Mermaids, pirates and music

I was drawn to this story by a TikTok influencer who was lauding the representation of diverse people in the book, and found an astonishing tale of friendship, love, and courage that kept me listening. The voices of the multiple POV story were distinct from one another, and rich with feeling. Each character was relatable and mysterious in some way.

I was pleased how the characters’ sexuality and gender was totally normalized and not an afterthought, nor was it simply an attempt to throw in education about the topic.

I really hope Jean-Francois writes a sequel about the journey to the Unknown. The ending left room for that possibility and I would gladly dive back into this world again to hear more.

Pirates, Mermaids, Music, Religious Cult?? AMAZING!

This story was everything I wanted in a nautical adventure book and more! I really enjoyed and appreciate the depth of the lore of the world that is given to you. The characters are intriguing and you can't help but connect to them. The narrator for this audio book was FANTASTIC!
The only thing I wanted out of this book was a little more time spent on certain moments of the book to really drive home the emotion or things that are happening. This is also just me REALLY wanting more of this story to read! I can't wait to see more from this author!

A must read!

I found a reconmemdation for this book on tiktok. I am always looking to suport new authors and was just giving it a chance off of " Pirates and mermaids" but was beyond thrilled that it has such a strong LGBTQ+ representation! It's very well written and while it's super obvious that there is homosexual and trans representation it is not the main focous in my view point. It is not hidden at all but the plot is where the focous is. We need more books that not only have representation, but normilize it. The story jumps around time fraim wise though so if you listen casually you might get lost at times.

An excellent beach read

I enjoyed reading this while I worked, the characters were solid, the fight scenes well written and the conflict unique and interesting. It has an air of warmth and kindness about it and a somewhat refreshing naivety about the characters. However its beats and stakes didn’t hit as hard as I’d like and in moments where it needed to use the stakes as a foothold, I found it lacking. Those moments I found myself putting the audiobook down and doing something else. The threat is world encompassing. Neither does the world feel all that big, but the threat doesn’t feel powerful enough to take the world. If I had to choose something to change, it would be to have a demonstration of how the threat would be an issue for the world. Then I can sub in a pirates of the Caribbean world. That would make the story hit better and the stakes feel stronger. The lack of heavy stakes does not make this a bad read, it felt lighter and more airy. Which is why I believe it would make an excellent read for a vacation to the beach. It’s not so complex that you would forget details after a short amount of time, there are points where it could be put down so you can go and jump in the water for a moment, and since it doesn’t feel heavy, you don’t feel stressed when you are away from it. I would easily take this on vacation with me.
