About this listen

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

Number one New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz takes listeners on a twisting journey of lost love, impossible second chances, and terrifying promises.

A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found.

Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Since then, he’s sought closure any way he can. He even visits regularly with Jessup in prison, desperate for answers about Emily’s final hours so he may finally lay her body to rest. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily. As the fantastic becomes credible, David’s obsession grows, Maddison’s mysterious past deepens - and terror escalates.

Is she Emily? Or an irresistible dead ringer? Either way, the ultimate question is the same: What game is she playing? Whatever the risk in finding out, David’s willing to take it for this precious second chance. It’s been ten years since he’s felt this inspired, this hopeful, this much in love...and he’s afraid.

Critic reviews

“Narrator MacLeod Andrews does an outstanding depiction of David Thorne, who is desperate to find out the truth about the disappearance of Emily Carlino, the love of his life.... Andrews channels David's confusion and heartache with palpable emotion and credibility, taking listeners through an exhilarating and perplexing story.” (AudioFile Magazine)

"[MacLeod] Andrews narrates this thriller in a slightly gravelly, straightforward tone that reflects the everyman protagonist who has been ensnared in a Hitchcockian conspiracy laced with romance and light science fiction." (Booklist)

“A gripping and downright frightening book...genuinely captivating. Koontz remains a masterful storyteller in multiple genres, and this is one of his best.” (Booklist, starred review)

Good book but not author’s best

The Other Emily was a solid book, but lacked the ability to grab you and make you not wait to find out what happens next. I ended up speeding up the narration to get through parts of it which is unheard of with a Dean Koontz novel. There was quite a bit of unnecessary self dialog from David which took away from the book. Give me Watchers, Odd Thomas or Jane Hawk, those keep me wanting more!

Quite delctable

First of all, MacLeod Andrews did a masterful job changing his voice for each character, male and female. The story itself unwound, sometimes languidly, sometimes in a rush. I enjoyed the changing pace. By the end of the story I was in tears for a character who is not an antagonist, but yet a tragic figure. So many philosophical concepts with which to wrestle. It was like savoring a box of exquisite chocolates. Another triumph, Mr. Koontz!

Not what I expected...

This is the first Dean Koontz book I’ve read/listened to so I was expecting a standard thriller. This was more science fiction, though, and I probably wouldn’t have bought it if it was listed as such. In any case, I’m not a huge fan of science fiction so this was ok to me. I liked the ending, but the plot seemed to go over my head.

CONFUSING

The book was confusing at the beginning. The plot was slow and I only got the story in the middle. My expectation was that the book would in differently.

Drastica turn in reality

I really liked this book until it lost touch with reality around 80% in. I might have believed it if the ending didn't feel rushed but it happens so fast it leaves you wondering what the heck happened. Also David is willing to do anything to be with this imposter Emily only to not want her at the end which just seems off character. total turn in everything. did not like the final 20% of the book so I gave it 3 stars.

Fantastical yet believable roller coaster.

Dean Koontz knows well how to weave a story beautifully. I'm a faithful fan for decades.

Promising start

I'm a huge Dean Koontz fan so every new release is something I look forward to, sadly while The Other Emily had a promising start a cool hook, my enjoyment of the book began to falter toward the midpoint of the novel. I'll try to keep this spoiler free, but I must say that book actually feels like it's telling two different stories, or rather one and a half stories as I don't think the second storyline ever feels fully fleshed out. Two stories that were never completely woven together correctly, much of the end felt just off, like there was stuff that was missing, information and plot points that I have no doubt were alive and well in Koontz's head but that never got transferred to the page. Also about midway through I stopped liking the main character as much as I had at the beginning of the novel. (Again, no spoilers, I just felt his actions seemed off compared to how he was portrayed in the first half of the book. MacLeod Andrews did a fine job with the narration and can't say I hated the story, this isn't one of Koontz's books that I'll likely read/listen to again and again.

Not among his good books

Koontz has created these science fiction type stories before. Although better ones. His tendency to give in depth description of scenery and feelings weighs this take down. I skipped to the end. I think he’s trying to add to his writing to lengthen it. Wasn’t worth the credit.

Another great story!

Weaving together the concepts of science fiction, eternal love and good versus evil, it's amazing!
