About this listen

When Sir Peter Pendragon, a retired pilot of the Great War, meets the free-spirited Louise, a devotee of the mysterious occultist Basil King Lamus, the two immediately get married and set off across Europe, on a drug-fueled honeymoon of heroin and cocaine. Eventually, in an attempt to break free of their recently acquired habit, the newlyweds find their way to the Abbey of Thelema in Italy, where the adults perform invocations to the sun and the children freely recite passages from the Book of the Law. At the guiding hand of King Lamus, the sisters of the Abbey maintain magical diaries, practice strange rituals, and pursue their true will. But what will become of Peter and Lou?

Powerful story. Tremendous performance by the narrator. I would probably enjoy anything Shea Taylor read. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire 13 hours.

I really enjoyed this book much more than expected, as it was much more than I expected. I should have known since all of Crowley's work always has so many levels if meaning. Like many audio books, the narrator can make or break the book no matter how good the writing. In this case it made it much more enjoyable to listen to, I wish more books had narration like this. I have several books that I can't bear to listen to, and Audible won't allow me to return. This book makes up for those, it really was a pleasure to listen to 💯

Awesome Narration

never heard a book read so beautifully and the writings be so emotional and intellectual with a dash of debauchery. definitely top 5 favorite book ever.

positively enthralling and poetically ravaging

Not really a book I would typically read, but curiosity. It was interesting and difficult for me to understand the mindset even though I grew up in the hippie era. I liked to keep a clear mind and usually had oddball reactions to prescribed medications and worsening symptoms. It was an interesting read but I still don’t understand.

Interesting

Review requires at least 15 words. I say to damn with your requirements, filthy Audible. And to damn with your profiting off of the work of others you lazy, insolent, greedy, corporation.

Best book I’ve read

I have read this book. it is excellent! usually I prefer the voice over which my imagination provides. However, this is one of the few exceptions where the voice over on Audible was far superior!

Amazing voiceover

From the beginning, I was enthralled in this book, and the narrator makes it so much better! With the different voices, and even singing, Shea Taylor does it brilliantly!

The descriptions used in the book, and how they’re worded are also so great! This book taught me things and made me laugh a few times, I’m definitely going to give this another listen at some point!

10/10 definitely recommend!

Book and performance are absolutely fantastic!

I loved it and lived it. The language was some what ancient but enjoyable. the book flows well with even when the writer is carrying on about philosophy. I found the best part in the end. worth reading if you've ever been down that road.

excellent story of the perils of addiction
