About this listen

Prehistoric creatures have again invaded Crater Lake National Park - and this time there's more than one.

Henry Shore has been Chief Park Ranger at Crater Lake National Park for thirteen years now and thought the days when he'd had to fight a rogue dinosaur that lived in the caves below the lake were long over.

Until one of his park rangers, to save a visitor's life, is in a deadly struggle out in the woods with a new breed of dinosaur worse than the last one. It's as big as a man, but this one is a young one. And growing.

Then more of the creatures begin to show up everywhere, threatening people and destroying the tranquility and safety of his beloved park. A tourist trolley filled with fifteen people is snatched up off the crater's rim by another version of the younger one…but this one has grown into a giant with fangs, claws and a deadly tail. And this one has wings.

Ugly Gargoyles, Henry calls them. For this one isn't alone.

They're flying beyond the park's boundaries into the neighboring towns.

So Henry, with the help of his son-in-law, a paleontologist named Justin, and a band of brave park rangers, and a few good soldiers, must not only protect his park and his people from monsters once more but find their lair and destroy it and them before the creatures kill again.

This book is incredibly awesome!

What an incredible read! I read / listened to this book in audio format via audible.com. I always choose the audio books first as the narrators tend to breath life into the stories, thus giving them a heart beat so to speak. This particular book is proof of that. While book one of this series was very good, book two with a different narrator is freaking fantastic! The voices and the sound effects... OMG. I heard helicopter sounds and a dinosaur growl among the many different sound effects.

Here we are in book two of the Dinosaur series by Kathryn Meyer Griffith. In Dinosaur Lake (book one), we read about Harry and Justin (Harry's Son in law) fighting and killing a dinosaur underground beneath a lake in the deep caverns. Book one had earthquakes and lava rivers and was a super good story! Imagine a National State Park have a dinosaur appear after an earthquake! I was so enthralled with this book, I couldn't wait to get to book 2.

Now in Dinosaur Lake 2 of the Dinosaur series, Dinosaurs Arising by Kathryn Meyer Griffith, we have Harry and Justin again fighting something prehistoric, only now they fly! Notice I said THEY! There are many flying dinosaurs in this book and it is 10 times more exciting than book 1 was. I mean edge of your seat excitement!!! In the audio book, there is 8 & 1/2 hours of this thrilling excitement! This book, with it's fantastic new narrator is one of the best audio books I have heard in a long time for sound effects and thrills!

The author, Kathryn Meyer Griffith did a bang up (great) job on this book. The writing is so thrilling, the plot had me from beginning to end (gripping the arms of my chair so many times). This series would make a fantastic movie! The narrator, Dan McKinney did a freaking fantastic job with his many multiple voices. The sound effects sounded totally authentic too! The effort this narrator applied to this book is absolutely awesome!!! Great book! I can't wait for book three to come out in audio too! I swear I could close my eyes and felt like I was listening to a movie in the theater!

Good Story but Dry Reading.

I recommend this book if you're in to cryptozoology. It's an enjoyable trip back to Crater Lake where new critters are threatening the tourists and townies alike. I did not care for the reader. His performance was oddly dull and unimaginative. IMHO, an unfortunate choice of narrator for such an exciting story.

Loch Nessie meets 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Would you try another book from Kathryn Meyer Griffith and/or Dan McKinney?

This was the third book By Ms. Griffith. The storyline was a good one, though it seemed to drag on more than have action. A very well researched piece of work. Ms. Griffith describes her characters well enough to be able to visual them well in one's mind.

What was most disappointing about Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s story?

It was a bit too predictable and seemed to drag on with very little action. In addition, a predictable storyline.

What does Dan McKinney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The characters' voices to life

Was Dinosaur Lake II worth the listening time?

Honestly, I was just glad when it was over.

Dinosaur Lake 2

If you could sum up Dinosaur Lake II in three words, what would they be?

more monsters

What does Dan McKinney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr McKinney did a good job w/the material.

Any additional comments?

I liked this book better than bk 1.IT was better written and delved into the characters more. The narrator was good.He did a fine job with the material he was working with.He seemed to have depth and feeling that was missing in bk 1.
Basically this book is about more 'monsters' at Crater Lake...no one believes they are real...even the people who dealt w/the first round, until it's too late.A fun, fast read especially good for the YA crowd.

What a sequel should be

This book jumps right into the dinosaurs and action. It doesn't assume the reader/listener forgot the entire last book like many sequels do. It upgrades the dinosaur threat and makes it different enough from the first. I also love the author's take on dinosaurs. It is quite unique. The narrator does a great job. He sounds like I would imagine the main character sounds like. Only things I can think to complain about: the dialogue can feel forced sometimes and younger characters often use the vocabulary of older people because the writer herself is older. Honestly though, those complaints are easy to dismiss. The cancer sub plot seems to wrap up a little too easily and should have carried over to the next book,, bit I've read the third book and now that complaint is less valid.I love this series. Give it a shot!

Book 2

If you could sum up Dinosaur Lake II in three words, what would they be?

I recommend that you read/listen to the first book in this series reading them in order. I actually liked the first one better than this one but this book is great too like the 1st book.
I just gobble up anything along these lines I can get my hands on. Some of it is truly execrable. That is not the case with these books....they are quite good. Although falling short on the technical side, they are very character-driven, and the characters are likable and well-developed.

I love this series!

If you could sum up Dinosaur Lake II in three words, what would they be?

Scary flying predators!

What other book might you compare Dinosaur Lake II to and why?

Jurassic Park would be the obvious one because dinosaurs are resurrected to interact with hapless humans.

Which scene was your favorite?

The happy outcome of a situation that seemed hopeless, but I don't want to give away too much info.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel the childlike wonder I used to get from sci fi books I read as a teen. Plus I really liked the characters and felt comfortable with them because I had already gotten to know them in DL1. I bought that one, and this one was given to me as a review copy.

Any additional comments?

The narrator had just the right tone for the main character, and his reading was perfectly paced.

Wow! What a performance!

Ok. So you must read Book 1 in order to appreciate this one.

Now this one begins with dinosaurs! Harry and Justin fought and killed a dinosaur in Book 1, and in Book 2 the dinosaurs appear after the earthquake. But these dinosaurs aren’t ordinary ones. No, sir! These fly! Yup. You heard me. FLY!!!!!

This audiobook had me nervous, biting my nails, jumping at every slight sound. I was a hot mess! but the sound effects??!!! WOW! AMAZING!!! You have got to listen to believe. Great job done by the narrator with the different, distinguishable voices for different characters. Solid plot! Great book! Happy listening!!!!
