About this listen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Terry McMillan comes an honest look at a modern romance, from love at first sight to painful reality to working toward a happy ending....

Franklin Swift was a sometimes-employed construction worker and a not-quite-divorced dad of two. Zora Banks was a teacher, singer, and songwriter. They met in a Brooklyn brownstone, and there could be no walking away....

In this funny, gritty love story, Franklin and Zora join the ranks of fiction’s most compelling couples as they move from Scrabble to sex, from layoffs to the limits of faith and trust. Disappearing Acts is about the mystery of desire and the burdens of the past. It’s about respect—what it can and can’t survive. And it’s about the safe and secret places that only love can find.

“A stunning achievement.”—Cosmopolitan

“If Ntozake Shange, Jane Austen, and Danielle Steel collaborated on a novel of manners, [Disappearing Acts] might be the result.”—New Yorker

Great voices and personality in the characters. kept it real. loved that. Did not like the ending but had forgotten about the title. Couldnt wait patiently to see what would happen next. such a rollercoaster ride but loved it.

Real and relatable

Even thought it was short. I listened to some parts several times. I disappeared into the story.

Good as always!

I could hear the pages turn in the background, and a couple of sentences replayed twice.

Performance Quality

So much was left out. I wish the story was unabridged. The story felt rushed.

The story, of course, is excellent. Pretty much anything written by Terry is. However, I give four stars for Overall & Performance because I honestly love the movie way better (Sanaa & Wesley will always be Zora & Franklin to me!), and also because sometimes I don’t like the sound of Terry’s voice for some of the characters. Aside from that, I’d definitely recommend this audiobook. I’d also suggest checking out some of Terry’s other amazing works.

Absolutely the tale of relationships ups and downs well told, and the power of love’s strength.

Love reading black love stories

The story has been shortened, and I am very disappointed! I've read the book multiple times, watched the movie repeatedly, and there is more to the story than this!

Disappointed

...it brought back the movie ...the moments

He's the guy you hate to love, and love to hate. Ms. McMillan's and Mr. Brooks' reading was very good. I guess I thought of times when stories on the radio were told with sound effects (War of the Worlds, 🤣) and almost expected that. Suffice it to say, this is the first audiobook in my collection that I actually found/took/made time to listen to! I usually put books on my Kindle and read them. What I did especially appreciate is that it makes one really develop the imagination. Having seen the movie "back in the day" (and actually lived the story), I found it easy to envision the settings, feel the emotions, and enjoy the anticipation of every "next scene". They're simply reading the book, but they're also telling a story. They make it relatable and very easy to identify with the characters on emotional as well as psychological levels! I enjoyed the reading, and appreciate that I was able to do so without eye strain! 🥰💖👍
