Publisher's summary

On February 28, 2013, after pleading guilty to violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, John Kiriakou began serving a 30 month prison sentence. His crime: blowing the whistle on the CIA's use of torture on al Qaeda prisoners.

Doing Time Like a Spy is Kiriakou's memoir of his 23 months in prison. Using 20 life skills he learned in CIA operational training, he was able to keep himself safe and at the top of the prison social heap. Including his award-winning blog series "Letters from Loretto", Doing Time Like a Spy is at once a searing journal of daily prison life and an alternately funny and heartbreaking commentary on the federal prison system.

Great and important read

This is an important book, and once you get into it, a great read also.
How many of us are really willing to stand up for truth especially when there are serious personal consequences?
With a broken, sometimes vindictive system, that can be like a steamroller, most of us might just keep our heads down.
We are fortunate that someone intelligent, articulate and with a good amount of common sense did stand up.
With his witt and humour thrown in, the book is an easy and entertaining read.
Most people never get caught up in or even see much of this unfair system. Nevertheless the people prosecuting the system are doing it in the name of all Americans, so it's consequences reflect on everyone in the end, even if most have never heard of karma.

Learn All You Need to Know About CIA Training and Prison Life

This is a great book that provides outstanding insights into the injustice that John Kiriakou and his family had to endure, when he became a ‘whistleblower’ in revealing the CIA’s torture program. The book also provides great insights into other challenges we face, the (In) Justice system, prison reform and moral decay. Well written and superbly narrated! Enthusiastically recommended!

One of the best books I’ve ever read!

John Kiriakou, writes such a good book about his work in the CIA and life in prison. It is really an eye-opener from a different point of view that I’ve never seen or heard of before. Thanks John for writing your point of view, made into a book that I have never considered valuable until now. This book was excellent! “This book would make any parent proud!“

Atta boy John!!!

I saw "Silenced" in late 2014- early 2015, shortly after it became streamable. John's story was the one I took the most interest in. I recently heard about this book and it was literally the catalyst that led me to sign up for audible. I listened to the entire book in under 2 days. Great listen. I love the stories, the details and the honesty. I'm glad he's free and doing well. I hope he never quits fighting, and never quits giving updates and writing more books about things. I even got into his podcast because of this. Keep fighting the good fight.

I'm extremely confidented

I'm extremely confidented, as a victim, I hate what transpired for you, now that being said some people ARE right where THEY should be. baseed on their own words from your own conversations. Yes, there is alot of reforms that need to be done, however a blanket approach can not be the answer. Prison IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A VACATION, no 3 mints on down-cotton full pillow, earned 16.00 dollars and hour, wearing a terry-cloth robe and cotton slippers? The more attractive prison become, the more reasons not to stay out. As far as the medical needs a big YES. the situations regarding medical needs and missed diagnosing and a proper and trained staff is very unacceptable.

keep up the good work.

Prison seems like the place to send people to not learn their lesson. I'm sure plenty don't reoffend, but I doubt that has any thing to do with the prison system.

Going to the mat for the First Amendment

Journaling his 30 months in prison for whistleblowing on the USA’s “ enhanced interrogation techniques” (
Torture in all, but name.), the author outlines the atrocious conditions of America’s prison system, and his experience there and against his dissent by elements of the government.
