About this listen

Mary Gaitskill returns with a luminous new collection of stories - her first in more than 10 years.

In "College Town 1980", young people adrift in Ann Arbor, Michigan, debate the meaning of personal strength at the start of the Reagan era; in the urban fairy tale "Mirror Ball", a young man steals a girl's soul during a one-night stand; and in "The Little Boy", a woman haunted by the death of her husband is finally able to grieve through a mysterious encounter with a needy child.

Each story delivers the powerful, original language and the dramatic engagement of the intelligent mind with the craving body - or of the intelligent body with the craving mind - that has come to be seen as stunningly emblematic of Gaitskill's fiction.

Well, she certainly enjoys writing about sex but her stories weren't so very clever or interesting.

This thing is just horrible. I made it through the first story and started into the second one, and couldn’t take it anymore.

Horrible

Such stunning masterful storytelling. A marathon for her. A thrilling surprising ride for me that kept taking me to important places.

Just when you think there’s no more, there’s more.

I wilk regularly power through a book even when I'm not really into and find something of value in the end but ... this is God awful. Disturbing for the sake of being disturbing and plain weird (not in a good way)

There's a reason this is a free read

I feel guilty writing this review. I tried hard to find some redeeming qualities but this book just stinks. Unless you really love this author or this narrator for so.e reason.... save yourself some time and money....do not purchase this book.

Two thumbs down... awful and pointless

The writing! The NARRATOR (read by the author)
This may go down in history as the the most uncomfortably bad writing and narration I’ve ever come across.

Just awful, AWFUL

The first time I have read Mary Gaitskill and I now want to read everything. There is a mystical quality to her acute and particular observations and descriptions of human experience. I love her sentences.

Brilliant and unnerving

Why would anyone subject themselves to this horrible work? It is trite and read with absolutely no inflection!

Horrible
