Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013

Mariah Conrad has come home. Badly wounded on active duty in Afghanistan and finally released stateside, she has no family to call on and nowhere to go - until Quinn Walker arrives at her bedside. Quinn - her brother-in-arms, ex-lover, and now maybe her future.

Quinn brings Mariah to his log cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky to rest and recuperate both physically and emotionally. While she's incredibly grateful, Mariah is also confused and frustrated. She's always stood on her own two feet, but now even that can literally be torture. She's having flashbacks and blackouts, hearing helicopter noises in the night. She wants to push Quinn away - and hold him closer than ever.

But will she get the chance? Those helicopters are more than just post-traumatic stress; they're real - and dangerous. Bad things are happening on the mountain. Suddenly there's a battle to be fought on the home front, and no guarantee of survival.

Critic reviews

"Kathe Mazur inhabits the characters with modulated voices that highlight the drawls and mannerisms of the townsfolk as well as the fast talk of the city slickers.... Mazur's steady, rich performance thoroughly immerses the listener in the story as she conveys the emotions and personalities of the characters." ( AudioFile)

Outstanding Novel

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this to a friend. It's a bit long, but the story holds up throughout its length.

What did you like best about this story?

Post-Traumatic-Stress is a very real part of the return of our veterans to civilian society. This deals with the issues in a believable yet hopeful manner. The characters in this are believable and engaging.

Which scene was your favorite?

Can't say. The settings vary so much that this book will appeal to multiple audiences.

Any additional comments?

This author's work is on my wishlist for Audible books. I'd even listen to it again, considering the multi-faceted appeal.

How was this an Audie Nominee?

What disappointed you about Don't Cry for Me?

The story seemed stereotypical in its portrayal of characters and setting of the Kentucky back country. Not everyone in the country marries their cousins and not everybody runs meth labs and is addicted to pills.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt and narrated by Ashford McNab.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kathe Mazur?

I would have looked for someone with more emotive qualities. Some characters, the main ones included, came off as flat and unemotional. I had trouble telling the difference from the heroine and the hero at times.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

All of the above. I was angry that the book came across as hick-ish when not everyone who lives in this type of area are rednecks. Sad that this so many people enjoyed it and think this is how life really is in the backwoods. Disappointment that it was nominated for an award when I'm sure there were much better productions made last year.

Any additional comments?

I will hesitate to listen to a romantic suspense from this narrator. She wasn't horrible the entire book. The best parts of this narration where the suspense and flashbacks of war. The worst parts were the ones were when she tried to inject humor; she didn't quite pull it off for me.The author, as much as I didn't like the overall story, did a good job of demonstrating the struggles veterans have adjusting to their old lives. I in no way felt she was mocking their struggle or the difficulties vets face on a day to day basis.
