About this listen

It has been seven years since Lessa's heroic journey through time to bring the five lost Weyrs of Dragonriders into Pern's future to save their world. Now, the deadly silver Threads are falling again.

F'lar, the Weyrleader at Benden Weyr, knows he must find a better way to protect his beloved Pern. F'lar's brother, F'nor, and his brown dragon, Canth, hatch a bold plan to destroy the alien scourge at its source—the baleful Red Star that fills the heavens and promises doom to all.

The bold Dragonriders take to the air once more and their magnificent flying dragons swirl and swoop, belching flames to destroy the shimmering strands before they reach the ground.

I was actually shocked when the book ended...

I was so involved in the story that I didn't realize how fast the story went by. I love this series and the writers "voice". Makes me wish I had a dragon!

Abridged version

This was a very abridged version of this wonderful book, and I was disconcerted to not hear significant passages.
The narrator Adrienne Barbeau was good and expressive. But characters didn’t really have their own voices, just differences to distinguish between characters in a scene.
I also find it surprising that different narrators pronounce names in the same series differently. Isn’t there a pronunciation guide?

Gotta love dragons

Anne McCaffrey is great as usual. Pern is my favorite world. An awesome story which is what I always expect of Anne.

Abridged is not good

I have read every one of Anne McAffery's Dragon riders of Pern books, multiple times. I highly reccomend the written books as the audio quality and abridged nature of this re-telling of her books left me sadly disappointed with the story. I have also purchased Dolphins of Pern, First Fall, and The Girl Who Heard Dragons, and Dragon Singer. As those ones are not abridged I can reccomend them, but you will be missing out on the background that is in the first three book. I gave this 2 stars for the story, basic as it is, is still McAffery's work. If you haven't read any of her works on Pern, please don't judge her by this paltry showing of it.

Bad Narrator

The narrator rushes every sentence in the book. She seems to have no rhythm or flow. It feels choppy and badly paced the entire time.

abridged is bad!

This is an abridged audiobook. That might not be so bad for other Pern books, but this is the first in the series. This is the book that lays the groundwork for the entire series, but unfortunately almost all of the groundwork is summarized in the beginning of the audiobook. I left with a feeling that I had missed a lot of the background information.

forever fresh.

splendid imagination has Anne McCaffrey! I loved em as a kid, still do.

the roll of the wings, the whirl of the storm, the plea of anguish heard planet wide. What a story!

the narration is good, but I'd always figured audiobooks would work far better voiced as written, one actor to one character.

Great Dook Mediocre Audiobook

I've loved these books since I was a kid (30 years ago) and have read them all at least 20 times over the years but the audio versions of all the Pern books are probably the most lackluster things I've ever heard... If I only heard the audio version I would never pick up the actual books and would have missed out on some of the most enjoyable reading of my life. Perhaps if the readings were complete or the narrator read with some enthusiasm they would have been better accepted but as it stands I wouldn't recommend them as some of your better material.
