About this listen

On the beautiful planet Pern, colonized for centuries, Land Holders and Craftsmen have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs to which they are bound. In times past, the mighty telepathic dragons and their riders were the only protection from the dreaded, life-threatening Thread.

But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people have come to doubt that the menace will every strike again. But F'lar, rider of Pern's greatest bronze dragon, has no such illusions. The Red Star is near; Thread will fall soon.

Classic worth revisiting

Read this many years ago, and have returned to the Pern books off and on through the years. It was a pleasure to listen to. The voice of the dragons is well done. My overall familiarity with the series has muddled my memory of what happened in this book, so it was nearly like a first-time read. There was a little less depth of story and culture than I remembered, but this likely is more due to the accumulated sense of the Pern culture and history in my memory, than a fault of this particular book. A wonderful concept in the world of science fiction / fantasy, and I recommend it if you have not yet "been to Pern." It is a good production of a now-classic for those who have. Enjoy!

Memories

I read this book 25+ years ago. I burnt out on the series after about six or seven books. However, some other Anne McCaffrey's books are some of my favorite books (Audible only has abridged versions of the others which I will not listen to, sigh). I like her writing style even though this particular story was a bit simplistic, and easy to guess the end, it was enjoyable.

The world of Pern.

I read almost this whole series when I was younger and I really only liked this book and the prequel Dragondawn, the rest of the series was okay but when I decided to listen to them again I decided only to read those two books especially since Dragonflight was on a daily sale way back when. Anne McCafferty has created a great fantasy world and completely different from anything else I have read in this genre. I love the dragons and I love the strong will of the heroine and the fact that the hero would do anything to save his world even if nobody else believed him. Narrator does a good job.

Great series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have always enjoyed this series. the only problem I have here is with the production. Dick Hill's narration is good but there are some "background voices" that come through on the recording and are distracting.

"He's going to shake me.."

I admired the cover, as I have always loved Dragons. I started this book over and over again as a child, but the language style was just too beyond me at that age. After scrolling by it, I decided it time to give it a try after 20-odd years.. Aaaaaaannnddd!? The language is still incredibly dry. The relationship between Lessa and F'whicheverwas...disheartening at best. Mostly though, it was outright abusive. BUT TIME-TRAVELING DRAGONS? The world was rich, and the relationship between dragon-rider, dragon-dragon, queen-dragon was fun to explore. The idea of going -between- places and/or times was incredible to think about. The names were difficult to follow in their similarity. This has been a series of sentences.

One of my first major reads when I was young

What made the experience of listening to Dragonflight the most enjoyable?

The nostalgia. Remembering when i first realized what an amazing author Anne was

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutley

Any additional comments?

I've listened to books narrated by Dick before and he does a great job. I noticed that "All the Weyrs of Pern" is not, and people say it is flat. As much as I love that book, I will not purchase it until there is continuity. Speaking of continuity, I know sci fi and fiction book have odd names in them, but please try to pronounce them the same throughout.

A well crafted story worth your time. PG13

A well crafted story that is excellently performed by the reader. This is an adventure that any gender will enjoy. I give it a PG13 for the mating scene. However, it is not graphic. I always encourage parents to experience a story before handing it over for youths. I look forward to the next story in the series.

One of my favorite series!

I first read this series over 30 years ago. I loved it this time around as much as I did then. It took a little bit to get used to Dick Hill's narration (I don't think he was the best choice) but once I did, I was transported back to the world of Pern and its dragon riders. The strong character of Lessa has been an inspiration for me since a young age.

Wonderful!!!

This is such a great addition to the story of Prrn! Everything that is confusing is always explained in such a natural way that it is a joy to read.

Thank You.

You've given a new dimension to a series I've read repeatedly. i grew up with Andre Norton and Anne McCaffrey. The narrator was very good!
