About this listen

In the world of Pern, Harpers are more powerful than kings, for the music they play can control the minds of others. Harper Hall is a type of music conservatory for harpers (minstrels/educators) and other music professionals.

For young Menolly, her dreams of becoming a Harper have nothing to do with power, but rather her love of music. But as the Hall's first female apprentice, Menolly must contend with the Master Harper who gives her a difficult time because of her gender. As Menolly begins to despair, she finds help in the shape of nine bright allies and learns that her musical talents may prove more powerful than anyone could imagine.

The Harper Hall of PERN is a lovely trilagy.

One of my favorite "sets" of the PERN novels. McCaffrey continues to give you a world so believable! The characters become good friends. the narrator is great.

too many parts of book skipped. background noise

wish I could return this audiobook in exchange for different version of same book. there was a lot of distracti g noise in background. Also, too much of the book was left out. wish the would have stated that this was not an unabridged version before I had purchased thos audiobook.

this is an earlier version of the story which leaves a lot out You're better off not buying this particular one.

I actually like the whole story I always have I read it and her listen to it a number of times. however this version leaves out a lot of seemingly minor pieces of information but really do flesh out and warm the story.

I wish I had paid attention to the description

I needed something to listen to at work and having grown up reading this series I thought it might fit the bill, I was wrong. the description says abridged but I did not see that while purchasing, just noticed while listening that things seemed to have been missing. Ah well, I'll just look for the complete reading.

Abridged version

This is an old, oft read favorite so I wasn’t thrilled to realize it was abridged. I actually had to slow down the narration for the first time too and it is very woodenly read. Not a good of job

Abridged version

An abridged version, but there's nothing in the description to make that clear. I feel cheated.

narrator spoke to quickly.

I wasn't fond of this narrator. she spoke too quickly and didn't have as much inflection as the other narrator I believe her name was Sally I would definitely buy the other one in the future

Not happy

This is an abridged version. I know the book well and was very disappointed to find several passages abruptly shortened. And Adrienne Barbeau may be a fine actress but she's a terrible narrator.
