About this listen
In Brian Paone's first novel, he chronicles the trials and tribulations of befriending a modern-day rock star. As a die-hard fan of the rock band God Lives Underwater, Brian wins the trust of lead singer David Reilly. This honor comes with its own set of extreme personal highs and devastating shared lows.
During their tumultuous friendship, David fights an extreme battle with drug abuse and depression. Pile on top of all this the throes of a cutthroat music industry and the realization of one's own mortality.
Dreams Are Unfinished Thoughts is a novel that convinces the heart of every listener that perhaps dreams are never really finished. Instead, they are passed on from one friend to the next.

Kid Congo Powers has been described as a “legendary guitarist and paragon of cool” with “the greatest resume ever of anyone in rock music." That unique imprint on rock history stems from being a member of not one but three beloved, groundbreaking, and influential groups—Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Cramps, and last but not least, The Gun Club, the wildly inventive punk-blues band he co-founded. Some New Kind of Kick begins as an intimate coming-of-age tale.

In 1984, at the age of 20, Duff McKagan left his native Seattle - partly to pursue music, but mainly to get away from a host of heroin overdoses then-decimating his closest group of friends in the local punk scene. In LA only a few weeks and still living in his car, he answered a want ad for a bass player placed by someone who identified himself only as "Slash." Soon after, the most dangerous band in the world was born. Guns N' Roses went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide.

Story
One of Billboard's 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time: The provocative transgender advocate and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me! provides a searing account of her search for identity and her true self. It began in a bedroom in Naples, Florida, when a misbehaving punk teenager named Tom Gabel, armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a headful of anarchist politics, landed on a riff. Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse.

As far back as he can remember James Corden has only ever wanted to be in one place: in front of you, doing something to make you laugh, cry, shout, or giggle uncontrollably. At the age of 4, he grandstanded throughout his baby sister’s christening, standing on a chair in front of the whole congregation, pulling faces and cracking everyone up. Despite himself, the vicar was impressed. And from then on he couldn’t get enough of the spotlight, even when it always seemed to avoid him. Throughout his teens, he and his Dad trudged up and down towards London....

Short and sporting waist-length dreadlocks, Morris is known the world over for his take-no-prisoners approach on the stage and his integrity off of it. Over the course of his 40-year career, he's battled diabetes, drug and alcohol addiction, and the record industry. My Damage is more than a book about the highs and lows of a punk rock legend, however.

At a high point in his career, Artie Lange performed a sold-out show in Carnegie Hall-and he did it with a pocketful of heroin. In the midst of a deep, self-destructive depression, addicted to heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs, he lashed out at everyone around him-from his cohosts on The Howard Stern Show to celebrity guests and even his longtime friends. Then came his legendary meltdown on-air, with 6 million people listening, after which Lange pulled himself together enough to go to a buddy's bachelor party in Amsterdam.

Story
Hounded by the tabloid media, driven from his self-made sanctuary at Neverland, Michael Jackson spent his final years moving from city to city, living with his three children in virtual seclusion - a futile attempt to escape a world that wouldn’t leave him alone. During that time, two men served as the singer’s personal security team: Bill Whitfield, a former cop and veteran of the security profession, and Javon Beard, a brash, untested rookie, both single fathers themselves. Stationed at his side nearly 24/7, their job was to see and hear everything that transpired.

Story
In this incisive memoir, Steve Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American Dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir.

Painfully Detailed Bromance
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would change the length. There are some details that could have been left out.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Brian is very honest about the one-sided bromance crush he had for David Reilly, frontman for the group God Lives Underwater. Brian seemed to idolize David to point of overlooking all of his faults. However, his enthusiasm for the music and creativity of the group shows his true appreciation for their artistry.
Being a fan myself of certain artists, I understand the zeal Brian had. I was able to identify with the thrill of meeting people from your fan tribe, the anticipation of going to the concert, and hearing unreleased music in advance. But what I am jealous that I could not relate to is that Brian experienced most people's dream; to meet and befriend the artist you admire. He had the unique experience of becoming true friends with a celebrity and the unusual courtesy of being remembered, respected and helped.
The live clips from interviews and concerts were an awesome added bonus to the audio book. It brought the story to life and reminded me that this is a true story and not just a fantasy.
This story fails in the details. Brian transcripts even phone conversations verbatim including greetings and goodbyes. Details such as where everybody was sitting in the van bog down the story a bit.
Brian's story is honest and vulnerable. David’s death is predictable because of his reckless life. The actual cause of death is the sad surprise. It is worth the listen especially if you are a GLU fan, despite the length and unnecessary details.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Brian Paone?
Brian Paone was the perfect person to narrate this book because of his sheer enjoyment of telling this story that shows through in every word spoken. However, I do not think I would listen to another book narrated by him.
Do you think Dreams Are Unfinished Thoughts needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The story is final. It needs no follow-up.

From Idol to Friend to Family
What made the experience of listening to Dreams Are Unfinished Thoughts the most enjoyable?
The depths at which the author/narrator was willing to plumb his experiences and share them with the listener
Who was your favorite character and why?
It would be easy to say David or Brian, as they're interactions are so stark throughout the book, but I would choose Seven. Seven's barely glanced life provides one of the deepest tragedies within the entirety of the book and the unraveling of what really happened to her and how each layer of this affected David is engrossing.
What does Brian Paone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
There are bits of audio clipped from radio interviews, shows and recorded material that would not transpose to a printed format
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Bringing an idol to earth
Any additional comments?
Imagine meeting an idol and they don't just treat you as a fan, but instead allow you into their life.
This story is a glimpse into the Industrial Music Industry, combined with the in-depth story behind the Lead Singer of the band God Lives Underwater, while also delving into an abstract view of the affects of addiction and the musical growth of Brian Paone.
If you have ever been into industrial, known some one afflicted with addiction or even interested in the story of a fan getting to know and befriend an Idol this is worth your time. I would suggest listening to it, not just for Brian's smooth voice, but for the music, recorded audio and other nuances that make this so engrossing.

Too detailed
I felt like this book was too overdone and drawn out. Although I liked the concept of this book it was just too much. I was bored and found myself being derailed from the book because it didn't keep my attention.
