About this listen

As Hercule Poirot sifts through his post one particular morning, he alights upon a letter from an elderly and (as it transpires), exceedingly rich spinster - Miss Emily Arundell. She is clearly in great distress and seeking his help, but doesn’t say why. Her only specific mention is ‘the incident of the dog’s ball’. However, what intrigues Poirot is the date of the communication - it was written two months ago. He persuades Captain Hastings that they must visit the lady with all haste.

On arrival they discover that she has died, apparently of natural causes. But Bob, Miss Arundell’s devoted wire-haired terrier, knows better. And so, soon, does Poirot. John Moffatt, as ever, stars as Hercule Poirot and Simon Williams as Captain Hastings. With music specially composed by Tom Smail.

Excellent performance

Dumb Witness is not the best Christie's out there and the story is not one that left a mark in my mind (except for Bob the dog) but the performance of the casts is wonderful and elevates the story. Really nice to listen to

Excellent Full Cast Radio Production

Any additional comments?

I really enjoy all of the Poirot BBC full-cast radio programs. It is so enjoyable to listen to all the different voices and sound effects/music. John Moffat is excellent as Hercule Poirot.

Classic Poirot and Hastins

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It is a good English mystery. It has ungrateful family members, a questionable companion, wacky neighbors and a clever dog.

What other book might you compare Dumb Witness (Dramatised) to and why?

Any of the other Poirot and Hastings stories such as Murder on the Links.

Which character – as performed by John Moffatt and Simon Williams – was your favorite?

Capt. Hastings by Simon Williams. He brought to life all the boyish enthusiasm of the character. I love his interactions with the dog, Bob. I have been a fan of Simon Williams since he played James on Upstairs, Downstairs.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

If only the dog could talk.

Any additional comments?

All the BBC dramatizations are worth listening to.

There’s nothing like it

Love the bbc radio dramatizations. Most tell the story as Miss Christie wrote them. For audiobooks the programs are perfect and the actors terrific.. I don’t think it gets better than actually listening to the unabridged books. These condense the stories, quite nicely done.

This Agatha Christie was very good. John Moffat is a great voice for Hercule Poirot. Of course Bob the dog was also very good!
