Critic reviews

"Though they both live in the Bay Area, these rootless siblings seldom cross paths, until Arnold, a black teenager, insinuates himself into their lives. Kincaid has been pigeonholed as a Southern writer, but this unsentimental story about the forging of an unorthodox family has universal appeal." ( Publishers Weekly)

This is a wonderful book. T. Ryder Smith took a small bit of getting used to, but after a time I came to believe that he was the perfect choice for narrator. The South is well described, as is the sense of family and gentleness. Ms. Kincaid reminded me of why I love living here: Hospitality, family ties, honesty, gentlepeople found nowhere else. These folks have their personality issues and surprised me more than once. The ending was somewhat rushed, but if that's all to complain about, I want more!!

Great southern reading
