About this listen

Hear why The New York Times Book Review called Cander “a smart, deft storyteller”.

Eloise hasn't quite figured out how to move on after the death of her son, Eddie. She makes good money, buys a new apartment, learns the piano, engages in an office flirtation, but nothing seems to brighten her days quite like the occasional letter from one of her accounting clients, Ed B. When, after months of correspondence, Ed invites Eloise to his country home for a visit, she finds herself overwhelmed by the "Eddies" of her life - the one she lost, the one she writes to, and the one she's eternally searching for.

"A powerful storyteller." (Lone Star Literary)

About the Creator

Chris Cander is the award-winning author of the novels Whisper Hollow, 11 Stories, the children’s picture book The Word Burglar, and the Audible Original Eddies. Her latest novel is the USA Today best-selling The Weight of a Piano, which the New York Times called, "immense, intense and imaginative." About the Performer

Gabra Zackman is a New York City based actress, audiobook narrator and writer (the Bod Squad Series, Pocket Books 2015; audiobooks co-produced with Rohan Audio for Audible Studios, 2016). She has performed off Broadway (including Bedlam’s Sense and Sensibility by Kate Hamill), in regional theaters, several Shakespeare festivals (9 Seasons with Hudson Valley Shakes), and on TV in Law and Order, SVU, and AMC as well as a handful of indie film roles. Gabra is a company member of the Upstart Creatures, as well as their Outreach Director.
Gabra has recorded over 500 books to date in nearly every major New York production house, has a home studio, and records full time. She has recorded books in every genre and her award-winning work spans romance, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, and young adult. She adores recording memoir, is a lover of scifi, and has won several Audiofile Earphones awards for her work, including a citation for Best Fiction Audiobook of 2017. Gabra’s recording of Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark was on Audible’s Top Ten Audiobooks list for several weeks in a row, and number 1 on the New York Times Best Selling Audiobooks list. She is a 2018 Audie Award and Odyssey Award winner for the multicast Sadie.
Gabra has an equal love of acting, audiobook narration, and writing. She has just begun directing and producing, and calls herself a "multidisciplinary storyteller". Her newest venture is as co-producer of her original audio series Nice and Naughty with Love Bytes Originals, and she is currently director and co-producer of the No Fear Shakespeare series for Hachette.

I almost feel inadequate to the task of putting a review into words. This was a short but completely fulfilling story of heartbreak and love. A whole life told in under an hour, and I think I experienced every single emotion there is, as I listened.

Perfectly written and expertly read, and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever cared about another human being.

This story will be in my dreams tonight for sure.

Achingly Beautiful

The story was good, but I really hate an unclear ending. The story leading up to it was good, if you like a peak into a mundane life.

The end wasn't great

Engaging from beginning to the last word. Such an emotional roller coaster in such a short time, amazing depth, really moved me.

Beautiful was the emotion evoked listening, beginning to end

Had great expectations, but the quality felt short. Has the making of a good story though, but it felt short. Maybe because it aimed to be short?

Not quite

So dark and lonely, bleak. Just when there might be hope for a sorely needed cheerful encounter, the story ends? Is there a missing chapter, or should l make up my own?

Where's the ending?

A powerful story, but not a happy one. There should’ve been one more final sentence: “I am coming.”

Powerful story-wrong ending

I'm in my way to find the author of this book, kidnap him and make him rewrite this ending!

Hi, I'm Annie.

Captures the love and grief and hope of a lonely woman. I appreciated that that the main character’s emotional life wasn’t trivialized.

Beautiful character sketch

Loved this short story! It ends with my imagination running wild with scenarios.
Hoping for another chapter or 10 to this story with so much backstory revealed, yet not resolved.

Well done and I wanted more
