About this listen

Gothic master Edgar Allan Poe's complete works are collected in this multivolume set by Blackstone Audio. Here are his short stories, detective fiction, and poems in all their mysterious and macabre glory. Also included are Poe's literary reviews and editorial musings, comprising an often caustic analysis of the poetry, drama, and fiction of the period.

This collection includes Poe's famous stories "The Masque of the Red Death", "The Pit and the Pendulum", and "The Tell-Tale Heart". Poe's poetry features prominently in this collection, with well-known classics such as "The Raven", "Annabel Lee", and "Lenore" presented alongside lesser-known works like "Eulalie" and "The Conqueror Worm". Poe fans will be treated to his fearless and acerbic analysis of then-modern works, a practice earning him the reputation as a "tomahawk man" in artistic circles.

EARBUD WARNING!

I love Poe, and this audio collection is one of the best I've heard. However, it needs an earbud warning. In several of Poe's short stories, there is maniacal laughter and shouting. The voice actors do an excellent job of capturing the tone of these stories; however, holy eardrum explosion. I listen on earbuds, and several times it was painful it was so loud. I would think this would be something that could be corrected in post-production/editing.

2 hours of literature and 42 hours of trash

This was an absolute struggle to finish. Poe tells the same stories over and over and OVER. There are the following main themes: 1) I fell in love with my cousin, and she died. 2) I married a beautiful woman and she died. 3) I have a fantastic wife, so I murdered her and went nuts trying to keep the secret. 4) I LOVE HOT AIR BALLOONS. 5) I am an up-and-coming pretentious someone. Poe's talent and genius comes out occasionally, but he destroys his own stories by hurrying the ending or never polishing them, which inevitably leads to garbage. There are predecessors of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, which are okay, but forgettable. "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum" are the best, followed by the three Sherlock Holmes predecessors. My advice: listen or read those and save yourself 40+ hours of disappointment 😞

Some many stories and too scattered their plots

I always wanted to read all of EAP after reading the Raven in high school but filled my reading time with other authors. I’m sure many people would say he is an amazing author but many of his works were difficult to melt into- I felt like I had no business taking on his other works. I equate it to people saying what an incredible artist Bob Dylan is and then I get this crazy animated look on my face like what are you talking about? He is disjointed, can’t comprehend a syllable and where’s the melody? I don’t get it. I will try the stories again later with open ears and not be so analytical. To this day though my favorite poem ever is an EAP work … it is Annabelle Lee.

Everything you ever wanted to hear and more!

This book is comprehensive, and you get all of Poe in one 44 hour shot. There is lot's to be recommended from gothic horror to humor and poetry. I loved his humor the best and his detective mystery's are the best. I did not know several latter writers credit Poe with influencing them, Melville, Doyle and Stevenson to mention a few. The narration is very good and worthwhile.
Some of his Critique are long and hard to listen to and some of his writings are long and wordy. but stick with it and you will be rewarded with some understanding of this genius.

Great audiobook! Just missing one thing....

The stories are classic, and the narrators do a great job. As others have commented, the one thing this audiobook is missing is the names of each literary work instead of just chapter numbers. It would be nice to be able to skip to specific stories.

Amazing musical tone and feeling of the prose.

Powerful, intense performance; very creative plots: again amazed by Poe's stories and poems. This is unique Audible book to keep for more study and enjoyment.
