About this listen

Audie Award Nominee, Best Teens Category, 2013

Sunday Woodcutter is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter. Not only does that come with an enormous family, but the things she writes in her journal also have a tendency to come true. When Sunday meets a frog in the Enchanted Wood who asks about her stories, the two develop a unique and precious friendship that quickly deepens into something quite magical.

One night, Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold—rebellious crown prince of Arilland and a man Sunday’s family despises. The prince returns to his castle and announces a royal ball, inviting every eligible young woman in the country. Rumbold hopes to make Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is and not the frog he was.

Sunday does feel a strange, strong attraction to this prince she barely knows. But what other twisted secrets might lie hidden in his past…and hers?

Grimm in a blender with a dash of humor

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Pleasantly surprised by the story line characters and interaction of the whole thing. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but I got on sale and got very good reviews. This isn't my normal read. but I really enjoyed to the very end..

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sunday and the entire Woodcutter family......the extended persons as well.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

I never heard her before but she was perfect for this story

Any additional comments?

This was a marvelous mix of Grimm Brothers and a quirky sense of humor and the macabre. I enjoyed and found it better than expected. I may check out more of this authors work.

Enchanting.....

Last week when I was on the audible website I was saddened to read that Katherine Kellgren had passed away earlier this year. I had enjoyed her as Jackie Faber and bought this book in her memory. It is a lively and clever story with many characters and she does an amazing job (once again) bringing them to life. It is definitely a YA book that didn’t cause me to drive around the block or loose any sleep but I did enjoy it and felt rather sad knowing this talented lady isn’t with us anymore. I will probably listen to the rest of the series eventually and would definitely recommend them to a younger audience.

Best Weaving of Fairytale

As a lover of fairy tales, I believe this to be the best retelling that blends and mixes together not just one or two tales together, but many of the tales you know. Magical and spellbinding from beginning to end.

Very good but also sappy

Very good book. The end has a lot of cliché moments so gotta be up for some corny/sappy parts to read it.

Spellbound

What made the experience of listening to Enchanted the most enjoyable?

Alethea Kontis spins a fantastic web of fairy tales into this retelling of the Frog Prince.

Which scene was your favorite?

Papa's story about the cat that gave a wish to the little girl was so funny that we listened twice before listening to the rest of the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! Katherine Kellgren was up to her superb reputation as a top reader.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the squeal with Saturday's story.

A Wonderful Little Tale

Enchanted is a charming story that puts a modern spin on fairy tale conventions and makes many humorous nods to the staples of the genre which should be familiar to almost anyone with even a hint of a mainstream upbringing. That said, putting a modern spin on things doesn't mean a deconstruction; it remains a fairy tale through and through (with people turned into animals, castles at the center of magical kingdoms, fairy godmothers granting gifts with secret significance, a fair number of family curses, etc), though perhaps a little more mature than the sanitized versions of such tales in circulation of late.

This is not at all necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the story is lively, funny and sufficiently self-aware to make you smile at the characters' predicaments while still caring about how exactly it all turns out. Both aspects are helped tremendously by Katherine Kellgren's narration, a woman who I am now certain can do no wrong. The spectrum of voices is diverse enough to keep everyone readily identifiable and the accents and emotion she puts into her reading made the whole book a true joy to listen to.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who grew up with a fondness for fairy tales, and a taste for a little whacky humor. The book is a bit short, but well worth the price.

Charming and Engaging :)

Enchanted is a charming and, yes, enchanting story. The story itself is its own though it weaves elements of multiple fairy tales within it. It is a progressive modern fairy tale. Narration was very good. An engaging, enjoyable and delightful listen suitable for teenagers and up. A good choice as a teen read for the themes and topics addressed within it. I do not have children but am glad to see a book such as this one available for teens as an alternative to the current dystopian trends in teen fiction. Not a Pollyanna story but one with a more positive message than some other teen/YA books. A recommended read for any teen or adult who enjoys fantasy and/or revisiting beloved childhood fairy tales blended together with a modern spin.

If I could only own one book, this would be it.

Where does Enchanted rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is full of twists and turns. It is one surprise after another, woven into a rich tapestry. I have listened to this book several times and enjoy it every time. I usually don't write reviews but feel I can extend myself for this jewel. It is well worth the price and then some.

Read It File It: While this is not my normal cup of tea, I do think I picked a perfect book to hand out for World Book Night 2014. Enchanted by Alethea Kontis should appeal to all fairy tale lovers and will make people smile! The story is really well paced and magical in an off the beaten path kind of way.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by: Katherine Kellgren /Length: 7 hrs and 51 mins

Katherine is one of my favorite narrators. Her voice is perfect for stories like these--it has a hint of magic and fun. Her narration enhanced the story and brought it to life.
