Publisher's summary
The third in Shanle's aviator trilogy, End Game takes the listener to the climactic battles of WWII in the Pacific and European Theaters.
A retired naval aviator (fighter pilot) and former paratrooper, Shanle puts listeners in the cockpit as hundreds of aircraft engage in the biggest and deadliest dog fights in history. Storm the beaches of Pacific Islands with the Marines, parachute into France with the Army Airborne, and stand on the decks of the USS Johnston as the tiny Destroyer charges an entire Imperial Japanese Fleet by itself. While facing down the enemy, these same men and women hold together families and try to safeguard a small sense of normality inside of a whirlwind of death and destruction.

In late 1941, President Roosevelt agonized over the rapid advances of the Japanese forces in Asia. They seemed unstoppable. He foresaw their intentions of taking India and linking up with the two other Axis powers, Germany and Italy, in an attempt to conquer the Eastern Hemisphere. US naval forces had been severely surprised and diminished in Pearl Harbor, and the army was outnumbered and ill prepared to take on the invading hoards.

Story
The Gulf War has been over for ten years. It's up to Hornet pilots like Cmdr. Brick Maxwell and his glory-seeking commanding officer, Killer Delancey, to keep the peace by a narrow margin - a margin called the No-Fly Zone. The Iraqi MiG pilots buzz the borders - just close enough to shake up the U.S. Hornets' nest. And the rules of engagement require the Hornets to hold their fire unless the Iraqis show hostile intent.

Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next.

Marine pilot Brad Austin and his carrier-based F-4 Phantom group fly into the heart of enemy territory daily without fear, but the rules of engagement hinder them nearly as much as the North Vietnamese. Restricted from attacking the enemy's MiG bases, Austin and the other American pilots are vulnerable to attack without the ability to retaliate, a weakness that tragically leads to the death of Austin's wingman. Consumed by the need to avenge his comrade, Austin goes one-on-one with the enemy in a battle that ultimately proves in war there can be no rules.

The United States is under attack. From the sea and the sky, the devastating attacks come, crippling the US military's ability to respond. Thousands have been killed and injured. For President Cord Macklin, this is the greatest challenge of his life, greater than risking his life in the skies over Vietnam and greater than guiding the country through some of the most trying times. But none has been more trying than this. Below the sea, a predator stalks the pride of America's Navy: its aircraft carriers. Deadly and silent, this killer seems able to elude all efforts to find it.

Story
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Story
On the morning of June 4, 1942, doom sailed on Midway. Hoping to put itself within striking distance of Hawaii and California, the Japanese navy planned an ambush that would obliterate the remnants of the American Pacific fleet. On paper, the Americans had no chance of winning. They had fewer ships, slower fighters, and almost no battle experience. But because their codebreakers knew what was coming, the American navy was able to prepare an ambush of its own.

Story
In 1942, Norman Hanson learned to fly the Royal Navy's newest fighter: the US-built Chance Vought Corsair. Fast, rugged, and demanding to fly, it was an intimidating machine. But in the hands of its young Fleet Air Arm pilots, it also proved to be a lethal weapon. Posted to the South Pacific aboard HMS Illustrious, Hanson and his squadron took the fight to the Japanese. Facing a desperate and determined enemy, Kamikaze attacks, and the ever-present dangers of flying off a pitching carrier deck, death was never far away.

Hellcats and Zeros
What did you love best about Endgame in the Pacific?
This rounds out Leland Shanle's WWII historical fiction Naval aviation trilogy. I had the honor of reading early versions of these books, and love the way Thomas Block brings them to life on audio. I'm honored that a character in this book is named after me, and thus my opinion is highly subjective. That said, I do highly recommend this series. The characters are very developed, there is constant action revealed in alternating points of view, and the details are expertly woven in. If you are turned on by Hellcats and Zeros, carrier decks and jungle warfare, you won't be disappointed.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Captain Mark Berry, of course ;-)
What does Thomas Block bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Thomas Block makes me as a reader feel like I'm there. He has a great storytelling voice, especially for WWII era fiction.
Any additional comments?
Look for Chip Shanle's next novel Code Name: Infamy. It takes the reader past WWII and into a post war, Axis-power nuclear chase.
