About this listen

The crime scene was the stage of the Unicorn Theatre, when a prop gun fired a very real bullet; the victim was an actor clawing his way to stardom using bribery instead of talent; and the suspects included two unwilling girlfriends and several relieved blackmail victims.

The stage is set for one of Roderick Alleyn's most baffling cases....

Good old fashioned mystery

I love the time period and the characters. The performance made me feel like I was back in time. Well done

The story

I liked the surprising ending. The narrator was really good, great range for the different characters

Fun mystery

The characters interacted well. The story moved smoothly, though the end was a tiny bit rushed

Always a good read/listen

Naio Marsh’s mysteries are always well constructed and James Saxon’s voices fit the characters and are always suited to the context.

Sound issues

The book was good but the sound was horrible! It sounded at times as though it had been recorded decades ago in a a tin can. Every chapter had varying sound quality. It was quite irksome as I love all of the other Ngaio Marsh books I've listened to. Not sure why only this one had technical issues.

Excellent

I can't believe that I haven't listened to a Ngaio Marsh before. What a fool I've been! Her writing is almost as good as Dorothy L. Sayers. I can't wait to hear the rest of her books.

Not this Author's Best Work

While the performance was marvelous, this story wasn't as engaging as other stories of his.

Seen the TV series?

I likedctgese more now that I have seen the inspector in action. There are always so many characters I have a hard time following without an outline. This story shows her intimate knowledge of the stage, and I enjoyed the reader's reading of the character's voices and stage hand calls for time and appearance.
