About this listen

In the Welsh borders, isolated by heavy snow and flooding from the thaw, cut off from telephone access, a tragedy has occurred. Old Dr Robinson known to be 'a menace' on the roads has met his end in a car crash, his big saloon thrown from the track down the steep hillside. But when the police arrive there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye: why was there a second body - an outsider to these parts - in the back of the vehicle? As the local inspectors dive into the muddy waters of this strange crime, Chief Inspector Julian Rivers and Inspector Lancing of Scotland Yard are called to investigate, with danger and deceit lying in wait among the lonely hills and authentically evoked landscapes.

Good all round murder mystery done well! Good plot, characters and narration. Think Agatha Christie!

Written 1954!

I’ve listened to many ECR Lorac (same author) books and this one has many of my favorite elements: Likable inspectors, moody atmosphere, great scenarios with plenty of alibis to sort through, etc…

I think it might just be that I’ve listened to so many of these mysteries that I guessed the ending pretty early on. But it was still a good reveal.

It was good

I'm not a prude, but I sure appreciate these old mystery authors who rely on character, setting and prose rather than sex and violence to get published. This one's a real page turner with an excellent ending.

Excellent story telling

A wonderful gathering of a variety of characters, extreme weather, an innocent rural setting and well-meaning folks. Even so, there’s been a murder and it must have been committed by one of them.
Post WW2 setting, skillful narration, plausible plot line and vivid descriptions of the people and place.

Calm, dignified sleuthing, by Jove!

I liked this very much. It was hard to break away from at times. Good narration of a good book!

Very good

This is another excellent, highly enjoyable Carnac mystery with a remote hill country setting. The place itself becomes a character in the story, its brutal winter weather a major factor in the plot. While there are places where the exposition proceeds pretty slowly, the mystery is intriguing and the narration always topnotch.

Another great rural Carnac/Lorac mystery

The author took her time to develop a sense of place, secrets, suspicions, and motives for each suspect. Escape to the hills and let this beautifully read book take you to a long ago isolated English hamlet where all is not what it seems. highly recommended

multiple motives for murder in flood

i liked the setting - remote English farmsteads long ago. the author did a good job of describing the life of people at this time & place. and, if it wasn't accurate, it seemed very believable.
the mystery was truly mysterious; the procedural satisfying; the investigators polite, thoughtful & successful (devoutly to be wished); and the resolution a surprise - at least to me.
the performance was compelling.
highly entertaining. i would love to hear more in this series.

totally taken by this golden age mystery
