Not what I expected but better

This is not my usual genre but, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline was very interesting and, it's obvious a phenomenal amount of research went into it. The science side of the book, as well as the action, drama and mystery, kept me coming back for more. Kevin Pierce did an excellent job with the narration. Overall, I definitely recommend this book. Isolated, New life form, it wants them! Awesome!!!

Erebus
By: Steven Bird
Narrated by: Kevin Pierce
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This book is very cool, not just because it is based in Antarctica! A team of scientist were trying to contact there pick up to get to the station and no one answers. They wait and wait then decide to travel by their snow vehicles to the station. The make the dangerous trek there and when they get there, the danger really begins! They find there is more life forms than expected on this frozen continent. Suspense, adventure, the elements, the life form -not telling ;) - , and so much more is in this story. Great characters, and plot.
The narrator is awesome and perfect for this book. Keeps the suspense up and is able to do a variety of voices and stayed consistent throughout the story. I think he really added to the story and made me like it more than if I read it myself. I certainly would give it at least a star or more with the audible version than just reading it. He adds so much to the story. Awesome job.

KEEPS YOU ON YOUR TOES!!

There wasn't too much squeamish material but enough excitement to keep my interest!! I'm glad that I'm not a scientist and digging into unseen and unknown things. Really glad that there are those who love this type of work. Yes, I know this was fictional but "it could happen!" Or at least from other materials that I have read, I believe it to be so. Thanks for a great read. Looking forward to more!

Erebus

The emotions, and reactions of the characters in this book are absolutely close to reality. Their experiences and challenges in this cold and brutal environment creates a story of survival. There is definitely no survival guaranteed when the simplest act of being outside without proper clothing could kill you!

Nice biological zombie thriller

I was worried that this book might drag as many of the other Antarctic thrillers I have read do, however I was pleasantly surprised! It jumped right in to the action and story. It is a bit “the thing” meets “28 days later”. A scientific crew based in Antarctica discovers a new microbe that gets unleashed unbeknownst to the remote group. They lose contact and have to figure out their way back to base, which is decimated. I enjoyed the book and the narration, i hope there is a book two as it has a bit of a cliffhanger. Antarctic Thriller

A microbe is unknowingly unleashed from the Mount Erebus volcano in Antarctica. As the organisms seek out new hosts, they think that humans will do just fine. When the sh*t hits the fan, an unlikely hero will rise - and he doesn't even have a PhD.

Oh my, this story was a lot of fun to listen to! The suspense and nonstop action overcame the fact that there really wasn't much intrigue to speak of. I had kind of hoped that someone would turn out to be a bad guy and throw a monkey wrench in their plans for escape but that didn't materialize. The story was exciting and had lots of tense moments to hold my interest throughout. I just love a story with a body count! Kevin Pierce gave a very good performance as narrator, both with the characters and the pacing of the book. Erebus was a great listen and I would recommend it.

Some quirks but a fun listen

If you’ve listened to books by Steven Bird before, how does this one compare?

I have never listened to anything by Steven Bird before but I would definitely consider picking up another of his books to try out. Although Erebus had a number of shortcomings there was nothing that completely killed it for me and overall the story was fun.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kevin Pierce is an excellent narrator, I have chosen books in the past simply because he was on the bill. Although Erebus wasn't his best (I've never really liked Kevin's accents and there were a couple in Erebus that just didn't cut it for me) it was still a solid job and an enjoyable listen.

Could you see Erebus being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

The movie has been done a number of times already. It would likely be a fun watch, I couldn't picture this being a series however and I have zero input on cast.

Any additional comments?

In summary, a fun listen though pretty "flat" - no depth or chemistry. I don't think I would pick up the next book in this series if one were ever written, but I would try out something else by Steven Bird. The books are pretty short so I might wait for an Omnibus version of his "The New Homefront" or "Society Lost" series; 6 hours is a tough pill when burning Audible credits! Will definitely keep my eyes open on future releases.

Good Thriller

This is the first book I’ve listened to by the author but not my last. The story takes place in Mount Erebus in Antarctica when microbial organisms that over humans and group of scientist need to get back to non-infested place to find the cure. It has great character development my favorites were Dr Graves, Brett , Dr Hunter and the russian (Facili?). Great narration. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys scientific apocalyptic.
