About this listen

After the One World Alliance's devastating strikes against the Continental Army’s two primary bases of operations, resistance leadership scattered their forces to escape certain ruin. With orders to rendezvous with their unit in a few months’ time, Joe, and his best friend Caleb, set out to find Tamara, who had been deployed with her new unit just prior to the attacks.

Along the way, they encountered friends and foe alike, eventually finding themselves wrapped up in an operation much bigger than they’d ever imagined.

Fun book, very personal with the author performing

I would go so far as to say the voice performance by the author was personal and intimate though not "THE HIGHEST" quality it was still very good quality. The end snuck right up on me but it was not an unpleasant ending. The comments at the end helped further define the objective of the book. Bravo Mr.Bird, Bravo !

Bird has done it again!!!

Bird has brought such believable characters back in a story so good. In our world today. it's easy to see how this can happen. he makes everything so easy to believe and suck you in to the story. Thanks for another great read.

Another solid effort by the author

Some are critical of the author as narrator. There is no doubt that it is an abrupt change from the excellent narration of the first book. However, after many years and hundreds of audiobooks, I quit being picky about narration. There are a few that I could not get through due to narration but with a little persistence, I get lost in the story and cease to notice the narrator's voice as a problem. There are some excellent narrators out there and I do enjoy them but I always give an author the privilege of reading their book to me. I find that special and am grateful that Steven read this book.

Perhaps the fact that I grew up in East Tennessee and am a pilot (like the author) made me sympatico with the tenor of the voices from this area but after reading several of Steven Bird's books, I wanted to hear this book and was not disappointed.

Some will be put off by the gun talk and the "prepper: mentality of this book. However, I believe that this work of fiction has relevance to today's struggles and his writing has helped me move past the narrative of most of the popular media with regard to guns and our unique American perspective on firearms, independence and self-reliance.

I would compare this book favorably with Lucifer's Hammer and the view of societal breakdown when infrastructure collapses. So, a book written in the seventies seems to corroborate the message in this book in a way that forces you to think about the "what-if scenarios".

I liked the way the Joe Branch character was developed . Of all of Steven Bird's books, this one seems the best positioned for a movie treatment. Oddly, even though Hollywood likes "shoot em up" action. I don't know if the message of this book will appeal to those who make movies. Though, I do think the story is good enough to create a recurring character better than a Jack Reacher character. Joe is motivated by setting wrongs right and is willing to sacrifice self to do it.

This is a classic good vs evil story and deserves more recognition.

Only Good Old Country Boys

Steven Bird narrated his own story this time. I'm a bit prejudiced towards Kevin Pierce's voice, but SBird did alright. Authors usually know exactly "where and what" they want emphasized better than anyone else. As for the story, it was good. However, more than good old "country boys" that are Patriots. My African American son is an officer serving in the Army. My daughter is an RN working for the VA and we are all Christians. Americans are more than just 1 race. We are a nation that is a melting pot. I hope that SBird will consider this in his newer books. Author A American, that I saw him pictured with online seems to do this pretty easily.

excellent follow up

Boyds introduction has to be my absolute favorite part of this book! though I do not know these authors personally, I was part of a facebook group for a time and got to know parts of them. Stevens self-narration on this book was well done, it isn't an easy thing to get right but he did it
