About this listen

A Neverending Race to Survive the Worst of Nature and Mankind. This Is the Alt Apocalypse.

The Alt Apocalypse is the ground-breaking, genre-bending series from Tom Abrahams. It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be listened to in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every book dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse; a nuclear holocaust, an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies.

Different heroes will emerge in each novel. Different characters will survive and perish. Your favorite character dies in one book? He or she will be back in the next. In the end, you'll unwind the loose thread that connects every character and every stand-alone story.

This collection includes all five full-length novels in the series: Ash, LIT, TORRENT, AFFLICTION, and POX.

Good series!

I'd read 4 of the 5 books in the series on Kindle (and yes, I need to buy the 5th one) and really enjoyed the audiobook. Tom Abrahams can spin a good story and Kevin Pierce has become one of my favorite narrators. If you like apocalyptic tales, I absolutely recommend this collection!

My only real complaint is that chicken sausages are neither vegetarian nor vegan! But that's the only thing I recall the author getting wrong.

Different but held my attention.

I liked the ending of book 5 best. The multiverse was an interesting subject throughout the series. Not my favorite type of book but well worth 1 credit and many hours of entertainment instead of TV.

Didn’t like the ending

Kept my attention. Didn’t care for the final book/ending but it was a good listen.

Weird premise

So without spoiling anything- the beginning Was pretty good, lots of alt apocalyptic stuff and and undercurrent starts to become apparent. But once you find out what that is you’re like, you’re kidding right? Super weird and extremely weak premise. I felt very let down actually.

Meh...

This was a unique way to make mediocre apocalypse stories only slightly less mundane.

good stuff

the narrator always does a great job. I do not know if I like him or Abrahams' writing more .

never got there

this series had an amazing idea it just never felt like it had the real stakes or got me invested in the characters. it always felt like it was building to a finish that was very bland and rushed. not the worst listen but could have been a lot better with the idea.

Liked

Great idea with some twists from the usual apocalypse / dystopian genre. Great book to listen to when driving or working around the house.

Great concept with lots of little problems

I'll start by saying that I enjoyed the series. It was an interesting premise and a neat treatment of the genre.

That said, I kept losing my immersion from all of the little details that rang false. Fire inexplicably spreading at light speed across wide streets and paved subdivisions, Flood water rising faster and higher than it seems the laws of physics could allow, and receding at a pace fast enough to move the plot but not fast enough to save one of the protagonists. Rain having a big effect two paragraphs after the rain ended. And so forth. No single book was immune.

My other gripe was the constant sense of Deus ex Machina. Lots of plot armor and reverse plot armor going on. Seemed like someone was always tripping over something right when things were getting hairy. Also, I know it wasn't really part of the agenda to go deep into the aftereffects of each calamity, but I would have liked to have had better closure on each. We did find out the fates of the survivors of the first book, but not until midway through the last.

Better than many - PLEASE READ IN ORDER!!

I loved the concept - a set of characters set in different end-of-the-world scenarios, and they can be read in any order. Some characters you like may die in any scenario, but the next one starts all over and they face a new armageddon. And at first, this was true, but then an overarching storyline begins to emerge, so while you DO NEED TO READ THEM IN ORDER, they are worth the time to read, and the overarching storyline that connects all of the stories is pretty good. In fact, it's a great value for one credit.
Having said that, there might be a few too many characters to keep track of, but that's likely my issue with ADHD.
I might even listen to them again, that that will let me catch stuff I didn't get the first time.
