About this listen

The depths of the ocean are as dark and unknowable as the emptiness of space. But to Doctor Clair Margraves, a marine biologist, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of discovery to sate her curiosity. Her next adventure will see her piloting a deep-submersion vehicle on its maiden voyage to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. But something strange is going on at the bottom of the ocean floor, something she’s never seen before. And she intends to find out what.

In Esca, Erica Shaef has created a claustrophobic horror of immense proportions, combining our own natural fear of what might lurk just beneath the surface of the sea with something entirely unnatural.

Interesting story

I thought that this was a good quick listen for my drive to work and I was actually rewarded; I really appreciated the subtle nods two HP Lovecraft. The descriptions of the creature are reminiscent of Cthulhu and it was really need to see this story play out. Definitely far better than that film “Underwater”.

The story was short but very well written. Exciting and thrilling! I highly recommend. The audio music was a nice touch too!

Deep Sea Horror!

Well written, deeply atmospheric, and most of all: scary! Erica Schaef's tale is an exciting blend of deep sea exploration, and cosmic horror. As you can imagine, this mix is enough to make your skin crawl!

Great voice acting work, and the accompanying sound effects only add to the thrill. Loved it!

High Price for such a short story

This is definitely not a novel. Not a bad story line but it could be expanded into a multi-plot thriller

Hated the ocean, hate it more now

I'm already terrified of the ocean. This simply solidified that fear.
I listened to this as I made dinner, and it was the perfect time keeper. The science felt sound, but the story felt not all there. I don't know how else to put it. I would love a sequel exploring this discovery, or at least Claire's recovery

predictable, not scary

Good idea but not very scary or suspenseful. The revelation of the key moment was very predictable. Perhaps could be better if developed into a larger story. Narration was monotonous.
