Publisher's summary
A life-changing treatment is conquering auto-immune disorders—why doesn’t anyone know about it?
Thirty-five years ago, Dr. Richard Burt began a journey to treat chronic autoimmune diseases as they’d never been treated before. Using a treatment originally developed for leukemia but modified to be more gentle—a one-time combination of immune targeting drugs followed by a transplant of the patient’s blood stem cells—he has documented the successful and often dramatic reversal of multiple sclerosis, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIPD), neuromyelitis optica, and Crohn’s disease.
After decades of study and randomized trials, his approach, which has been duplicated in other parts of the world, is finally being recognized as an effective means of reversing these “incurable” diseases. Some of his patients have been symptom-free for more than twenty years, and in this book Dr. Burt tells their stories alongside his own journey of developing and refining the treatment, known as hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for autoimmune disorders. “These patients are the heroes,” Dr. Burt has said. “Their bodies and spirits faced unrelenting disease, and yet they fight valiantly against the suffering and obstacles.”
What is HSCT? How does it work? What are the risks? Why aren’t more doctors talking about it? And why is it still out of reach for so many patients who could benefit from it? Dr. Burt answers these questions and many more. Written for the layperson, Everyday Miracles grants patients with autoimmune diseases and the people who love them insights into the revolutionary approach that could convert their life sentence into a one-time reversible illness.

Story
The heart of many hospitals is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It is a place where humanity, ethics, and science collide in dramatic and deeply personal ways as parents, doctors, and nurses grapple with sometimes unanswerable questions: When does life begin? When and how should life end? And what does it mean to be human? Nearly 20 years ago, Dr. John D. Lantos wrote The Lazarus Case, a seminal work on ethical dilemmas in neonatology. He described the NICU as “a strong, strange, powerful place”. The

His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

A tear-jerker that promotes hope
Until you actually have an auto-immune disease such as multiple sclerosis (MS), you don’t truly know what it’s like to battle a disease daily. Dr. Burt eloquently described several of his patients and the hardships they endured. This story gives hope (and tears) to those who were told that there is no cure and looked at their life in a dim light. Thank you Dr. Burt for helping that light shine bright.

A Modern Hero To Many
My daughter was diagnosed with MS when she was 17 years old. None of the MS drugs were keeping the monster at bay. She was rapidly declining. After learning about Dr Burt and HSCT from a friend, we went to meet him. He approved her to have HSCT, but the insurance provider did not. it only took 3 months for us to raise the necessary funds. At the age of 19 years, my daughter had HSCT. Like so many others of Dr. Burt's patients, she left the hospital free of all MS symptoms and off all her previous medicines. It has been almost 7 years and all is well. Blessed to have been able to witness a miracle, Dr Burt will always be our hero. The stories he tells in this book will ring out true to those who have had HSCT, as well as their family members. Dr. Burt is so passionate regarding his work, and is so compassionate of others, both of which shines through whether in person or in written word. HSCT is the way of the future. Read this book and you will learn why. Everyday Miracles is well written.

Miraculous indeed!
Dr. Burt’s voice is so nice to hear again. In this book, he chronicles his journey to cure my disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and many other autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Burt explains this miraculous treatment, while interweaving many of his patient’s stories, so seamlessly, to show his passion and fight over the years to find a protocol, that not only works, but also is kindest to the body.
Dr. Burt speaks from his heart and delves into the difficulties and obstacles presented by the healthcare system, pharmaceutical companies, and scientific community, in establishing and proving his treatment as one to be considered, if not become the standard of care, to treat people with autoimmune diseases.
Thank you Dr. Burt, for writing this book, so that everyone has a chance to learn about this treatment, which gives us something treasured when stricken with a progressive disease.
Hope.
I am so honored and humbled to be one of his Everyday Miracles. Six years later and MS is a memory for me. Thank you for saving so many of us and for continuing your ground-breaking research.
You have given us all hope that we can beat these previously incurable diseases.
