It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

Story isn't just one way to persuade. It's the way. It's built into the architecture of the brain, and has been since early humans gathered around the camp fire, trying to figure out how to outsmart the lion next door. In Story or Die, story coach Lisa Cron sets out to decode the power of story, first by examining how the brain processes information, translates it into narrative, and then guards it as if your life depends on it.

Critic reviews
"I wish I’d read Everyone Has What It Takes when I was starting my first book. Or my second. Or, for that matter, my hundredth magazine article. For me, as for most writers, self-doubt is never in short supply. Wisdom is. The wisdom of someone who’s walked the whole discouraging, uplifting, terrifying, exciting road of a writer’s life. Bill Kenower has that wisdom in abundance. Everyone Has What It Takes is a quietly powerful guide to both writing and life that will help you get past your psychological roadblocks and into your craft, whatever that may be. This book is a treasure." (Martha Beck, New York Times best-selling author, sociologist, and life coach)
“I always look forward to hearing what William Kenower has to say about writing. In his latest book, Kenower explores what it means to be a successful creative as he examines the equality of personal talent. As usual, I felt energized and validated by his intellectual discussion of prose and life. Kenower reminds us to enjoy the whole writing journey, not just the high points. Everyone Has What It Takes will give your creative side a much-needed boost, which is good, because, as Kenower says, ‘... the page is waiting for you.’” (Windy Lynn Harris, author of Writing & Selling Short Stories & Personal Essays)
“Like Elizabeth Gilbert in Big Magic, Bill Kenower teaches us that sometimes the simplest ideas are the most profound. Follow your curiosity. Lead your life. Write your books. In honest, accessible prose, Kenower takes us past craft and into the psyche, where all writing starts, and gives us the core lessons that every writer needs to hear, and probably every day.” (Erica Bauermeister, best-selling author of The School of Essential Ingredients and The Scent Keeper)

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing. In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning.

In each of our lives we are faced with events that seem inexplicable, unjust, even cruel - events that can shatter our perception of the world, our understanding of ourselves, and our faith in a higher power. Friends and family members often offer comfort with "Everything happens for a reason" - a simple, common phrase with an unbearably elusive meaning. In Everything Happens for a Reason, psychotherapist Mira Kirshenbaum helps us understand the principles behind this frequently used phrase and provides us with tools to grasp its true meaning.

The law of attraction tells us that whatever we focus our attention on, consciously or not, we attract into our lives. Think happy thoughts, enjoy happy experiences. And vice versa. The best-selling Begin with Yes introduces the law of action, a principle that reverses the order - and is equally powerful: What we do affects how we think and the kinds of experiences we have. When we take small, manageable steps, we feel more positive, and our lives flow more smoothly. Begin with Yes is all about setting things in motion and opening new doors. Getting unstuck.

If every therapist and psychotherapist on the planet could repeat this to their clients, like a mantra, again and again, there would be fewer therapists and psychotherapists. Because it works. Very quickly. Realising that what you're worrying about and stressing over doesn't really matter so much in the grand scheme of things is the door to freedom and healing. And the little profanity 'F**k It' is the key to that door.

True and awe inspiring
I read books about writing all the time, about how and when and where but, this one, this one reminded me WHY i write. It seems, like he said, you forget and i didn’t realize you could. Thank you is all i can say, i had been living too much in the future, and in the middle of my shift at work he reminded me to live breath and be in this moment. I hope the author reads this because he has shone a light in a dark place and i will practice every day how to be in the moment and love everything i do, not just writing but living 😁
