About this listen

No more excuses. "Let the lawn get shaggy and the paint peel from the walls," best-selling novelist Walter Mosley advises. Anyone can write a novel now, and in this essential book of tips, practical advice, and wisdom, Walter Mosley promises that the writer-in-waiting can finish it in one year. Mosley tells how to:

  • Create a daily writing regimen to fit any writer's needs - and how to stick to it.
  • Determine the narrative voice that's right for every writer's style.
  • Get past those first challenging sentences and into the heart of a story.

Intended as both inspiration and instruction, This Year You Write Your Novel provides the tools to turn out a first draft painlessly and then revise it into something finer.

Fantastically Short and to the Point

I was looking for a book to recommend to someone who wants to write, but is not a big reader and eschews fluff of any kind in instructional material. This is the book for him. It gives great advice and covers the basics of what is necessary to write a book in a year. The narrator is excellent and adds another dimension to the writing. I heartily recommend this to you if you have similar characteristics as my new writer friend.

Finally!

A prized author that is able to express what’s needed to write a novel, without the “filler” to increase the length of the book! Well done, Walter Mosely!

Thank U Mr. Mosley

As of October, 2023 I am a published author! After reading/listening to this book, I now know my missteps and also where I did okay. I chuckled when you said that the first draft should be completed in three months. It took me 4 1/2 months to do so, but I am still proud of my work and thankful for your book and the sharing of your gift!

As Elegant as Walter Mosley’s Fiction

An encouraging, no-nonsense guide for emerging novelists. Concise but full of illuminating concrete examples. Expertly written by Mosley and expertly read by Graham.

Practical Advice

This book does exactly what it promises to do: to encourage and instruct one to write their first novel. If you’re looking for an erudite tome with deep literary ponderings this is not it. On the other hand, if you are serious about writing your first novel and want practical advice from someone who has done it twenty seven times, this is the book. It is short, to the point and filled with little gems that will save you a lot of trouble and make your writing much more effective.
