Publisher's summary

Read by the author.

New York Times best-selling author Donald Miller shares the plan that led him to turn his life around.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing.

In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning. He breaks down the transformational, yet practical, plan that took him from slowly giving up to rapidly gaining a new perspective of his own life’s beauty and meaning, igniting his motivation, passion, and productivity, so you can do the same.

The lessons in this book will teach you how to:

  • Help you discover when you are playing the victim and villain.
  • Create a simple life plan that will bring clarity and meaning to your goals ahead.
  • Take control of your life by choosing to be the hero in your story.
  • Cultivate a sense of creativity about what your life can be.
  • Move beyond just being productive to experiencing a deep sense of meaning.

Donald Miller will help you identify the many chances you have of being the hero in your life, and the times when you are falling into the trap of becoming the victim. He will guide you in developing a unique plan that will speak to the challenges you currently face so you, too, can find the fulfillment you have been searching for in your life and work.

Is pretty good, I would want to see more actionable advice

Overall a good read/listen and an interesting take on life. I personally prefer more actionable steps and less “theory” or explanations. That’s the only point that decreased the value of this book for me.

A great guide!

I’ve enjoyed each Miller book, and this one was especially enjoyable because be mentioned the Ride:Well ride; Christina and I were the GCC hosts when the ride came thru Tyler - and we got to actually ride about 10 miles with the group. A wonderful book, building on the principles I enjoyed so much in Storybrand.

Builds on Viktor Frankl and Joseph Campbell

One of my very few reviews I ever wrote.
I’m very glad I picked this up. So relatable for me. As an admirer of Viktor Frankl and Joseph Campbell this for me has gone the next step, put their teachings into our time, at least relatable for me. The author has walked the talk which shines through all the way.
Very grateful for him having written this book.
Excellent performance as well.

A clear call to transformation *excellent*

As a writer — and one who has worked with the Hero’s Journey — I’m envious at this author’s masterful use of the monomyth. I’m also envious of how he crafted a clear path to make it actionable in modern life.

As a reader, this book is a joy. It’s clean and easy to follow. It issues a tremendous challenge to create meaning in life. But, there are a lot of books that do this.

This one’s different from many in that Miller spells out his own struggles and how he lived out the Victim archetype for so many years.

That’s why I trust him as a guide in this book — he tells a story of dream - struggle - victory that I find endearing and ultimately inspiring.

It doesn’t hurt that he and I are the same age and share a lot in common from our childhoods (I also stood in line for government cheese as a kid). And he often quotes Viktor Frankl, whose book, Man’s Search for Meaning, became a lifesaver and turning point for me in one of my darkest years.

Oh, and the resources he offers as bonus items are useful as immediate ways to integrate the lessons.

Five Stars all around!

Modern & Practical Spin on Viktor Frankl’s Work

Maybe it’s just me but “meaning” often feels like a fleeting idea these days. Donald Miller addresses that tension head on in hero on a mission.

I enjoy most books that I read and I find helpful nuggets no matter what. But this book may be one of the most important books I read in my entire life because of the current season I’m in as a father of young children, as the owner of a young butt quickly growing company, and as a person of faith struggling to make sense of so much right now. It’s rare that I want to send a book to every person that I love but this one checks all the boxes and I’ve already started sending it.

I’m also so grateful that we get to hear his voice in this audio book because you can hear the emotion and the nuance as he discusses philosophy, his family, his dog, and the practical ways we can navigate meaning in our individual lives.

It might be a little unfair not to leave out the fact that I know Don personally. I’ve been able to work alongside him The last couple of years creating video/photo content for his company. That said, I’ve heard many of these principles on camera and off camera but the way he weaves them together in this book is extraordinary. Pure brilliance.

A must read/listen!
