About this listen

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Everything We Keep comes the highly anticipated sequel. Told from one man's two perspectives, Everything We Left Behind effortlessly blends suspense, mystery, and romance in an exploration of loss, resilience, and the compelling need to protect the ones we love at all cost.

Two months before his wedding, financial executive James Donato chased his trade-laundering brother Phil to Mexico, only to be lost at sea and presumed dead. Six and a half years later, he emerges from a dissociative fugue state to find he's been living in Oaxaca as artist Carlos Dominguez, widower and father of two sons, with his sister-in-law Natalya Hayes, a retired professional surfer, helping to keep his life afloat. But his fiancée, Aimee Tierney, the love of his life, has moved on. She's married and has a child of her own.

Devastated, James and his sons return to California. But Phil is scheduled for release from prison, and he's determined to find James, who witnessed something in Mexico that could land Phil back in confinement. Under mounting family pressure, James flees with his sons to Kauai, seeking refuge with Natalya. As James begins to unravel the mystery of his fractured identity, danger is never far behind, and Natalya may be the only person he can trust.

This does wrap up the story but I missed many of the characters from the 1st book. I also feel like the ending was rushed.

Wrapped up

I thought the second book was not going to be as good as the first one but I was wrong. I loved hearing the story from James / Carlos perspective.

I am hooked!

Liked this story and the prequel. My only complaint is that the accent of the narrator
was Inconsistent. He used the “ Carlos accent” on my opinion at the wrong times. He used it for people who didn’t need it and didn’t use it fir Carlos. It was confusing at times.
This was not enough of an issue to prevent enjoying the book overall.

Good story, but Accent not consistent

I usually prefer female narrator, usually preferring a female POV, however this second book in series, following James was extremely well done. I did a lot of crying and heart warming over the last 24 hrs. Great read and listen.

Hearing the story continue from Carlos'/James' point of view was both clever and fascinating! I thought I'd miss Aimee and Ian too much, but the richness of the story and its characters did NOT leave me disappointed.

The multiple arch plots and mini-plots weave an intriguing, exciting story that makes this book a page-turner and left me wanting more!

Great sequel to the first book!

I must admit I got angry with Amy several times during the first book because I didnt understand why she didn't give up on James already. But this book gave a picture of a truly decent man and was very heart warming.

Beautiful story

What did you like best about Everything We Left Behind? What did you like least?

I liked the first book, so I was excited to read the second. But - it was just a little cheesy. Might have been the way it was read, but I just didn't love it.

What could Kerry Lonsdale have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Some of the details were unnecessary - like "lacing up his Nikes" - just sneakers would have been fine. Let us imagine some things. Particularly from the point of view of Carlos, it just seemed like a lot of cheesy metaphors, especially in describing the relationships. Although I know this was from James/Carlos POV, I would have liked a lot more interaction with Amy - the character readers already know and like. Maybe coming in another book?

What didn’t you like about Timothy Andrés Pabon’s performance?

I didn't like when he did his Carlos voice. It seemed so stereotypical and made me feel kind of weird and uncomfortable. It didn't lend authenticity to Carlos' voice. And I really didn't like when he did women's voices - it just didn't work for me.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

I think this series is based on an interesting concept, but particularly this second book spent a lot of time just saying the same thing over and over, and not really moving the story along.

A bit cheesy...

Good story! Looking forward to the next book. Definitely read the 1st book in the series to get the most out if this one. The whole story line is starting to come together. Leaves some questions and my curiosity cant wait to get to the next book. I do wish Amy was more involved with James in this story, that leaves me a little sad. It's like a tragic love story. But I wont give away details to ruin the book for anyone. Enjoy!

What a mystery
