About this listen

The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from number-one New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner John Sandford.

After the events in Gathering Prey, Lucas Davenport finds himself in a very unusual situation - no longer employed by the Minnesota BCA. His friend, the governor, is just cranking up a presidential campaign, though, and he invites Lucas to come along as part of his campaign staff. "Should be fun!" he says, and it kind of is - until they find they have a shadow: an armed man intent on killing the governor...and anyone who gets in the way.

Critic reviews

"The latest Prey novel is exciting, politically astute, and ultimately terrifying. Sandford and Davenport are in top form.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Add a hammock under a shady tree, and you've got a quintessential summer read.” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)

“Sandford, as always, sets a heart-pounding pace. He permeates his work with wit, an engaging hero readers have come to cherish and a cat-and-rat match that in this case draws on the streak of violence that for years has left a bloody stain on the nation. Timely and troubling, it’s a must-read for thriller devotees and political junkies.” (Richmond Times Dispatch)

Wonderful series

I listened to ever book in this series and everyone was good but most were spectacular. I just hope I can find books that are at this level. I loved listening getting to know all the characters.

Prime!

Mystified by the “boring” reviews. This is a story where the villain is a fanatic — something hard to swallow for some maybe unless you’re from the Midwest in our current political climate with more than its share of political nose-thumbers and lack of civility. Lucas does investigating, his prime skill, and the cast of characters are rich! Less shooting and gore, more people storytelling in this one.

Great Story - Intense Action

Any additional comments?

Lucas Davenport still has it! He is still super cool and smart. The Porsche has been replaced with a Mercedes SUV, which suits the older Davenport better. Lucas is no longer a cop but is on special assignment for the Governor. The cop brotherhood from Iowa embraces Lucas, for the most part, and help him with his assignment. They serve as his "badge". We travel the highways at all hours of the night and day with Lucas in the SUV. I am beginning to know the highway numbers in Iowa and Minnesota just from reading Davenport and Flowers series. There are a couple of dedicated members of a post hippie era group on a mission to assasinate a presidential candidate. They are cunning, determined and without compassion. My only complaint is that the book is somewhat slanted favorably toward the book's female presidential candidate who is clearly supposed to be "Madam Secretary". I do not like the real life Madam Secretary at all, so that was a turn off for me. Of course I did not want anything bad to happen to the female candidate, but I wish Sandford had not been quite as political. I could not guess whether or not Sandford was going to let something bad happen or if he would let Lucas stop it - that kept me on the edge of my seat toward the end. The action at the State Fair was very exciting. Lucas is a rock star - so are many of the other law enforcement officers. Virgil Flowers, Weather and some of the Minnesota cops from former books come into play in a small way. This book sets us up for the next chapter in Lucas Davenport's career - he is going into a new and exciting position in law enforcement. Sandford is a master story teller and can bring characters to life in a big way. The reader, Richard Ferrone, is a master performer. He has given great and consistent accents to the characters. His tone matches the mood - excited, tense, funny or what ever Sandford has written. I think Ferrone is one of the best performers/readers in the audible world.

Never disappointed with the Prey series

Once again John Sanford has given us an outstanding book with Lucas Davenport as the main character. Timely and provocative I enjoyed this book immensely. As long as Richard Ferrone is narrating I'll always listen to the Prey series.

Not every woman speaks through her nose!

Ferrone! Well read except that you have a tendency to make all the women characters sound as though they are speaking through their noses. It fit the main female antagonist, but not Weather or the governor to be or Grace ... I do love how sometimes the words you stress change the connotative or literal meaning of the sentence as I imagined it: and you do wry and laconic really well.

WOW!! What a Great Story👍👍👍👍👍👍

John Sandford does it again. This is a six thumbs up book. I have loved everyone of Lucas Davenport's stories but this one is especially satisfying. Wish Mr. Sandford wrote more than one a year though and Richard Ferrone did a very good job but unfortunately nobody sounds like Dick Hill.
