Publisher's summary

Writer/director/producer Justine Bateman examines the aggressive ways that society reacts to the aging of women's faces.

Face is a book of fictional vignettes that examines the fear and vestigial evolutionary habits that have caused women and men to cultivate the imagined reality that older women’s faces are unattractive, undesirable, and something to be "fixed".

Based on "older face" experiences of the author, Justine Bateman, and those of dozens of women and men she interviewed, the book presents the listener with the many root causes for society’s often negative attitudes toward women’s older faces. In doing so, Bateman rejects those ingrained assumptions about the necessity of fixing older women’s faces, suggesting that we move on from judging someone’s worth based on the condition of her face.

With impassioned prose and a laser-sharp eye, Bateman argues that a woman's confidence should grow as she ages, not be destroyed by society's misled attitude about that one square foot of skin.

I'm So Glad I Listened!

Listening to Justine Bateman narrate this book is a powerful experience. Her talent as an actress elevates FACE in an irresistible way. I hadn't intended to race through the book but I kept deciding to listen to "just one more chapter".

The stories in this book couldn't be more relevant. As a 55 year old woman, I see the need to talk about these issues and take a stand. I applaud Justine Bateman for her work here!

We can’t see our value on the outside. We must know our value on the inside

Thank you for taking us on this journey Justine Bateman. Thank you for opening our hearts to truly see the unjustness and injury done to so many women. I vow to love my 72 year old face and body and encourage us all to be bold and bright enough to listen to Ms Bateman

A refreshingly honest view of 21st century misogyny

A brilliant and brave look at the experience of growing older as a woman in our youth-obsessed society. The observations are painfully accurate and too often the stories that get swept under the rug. It’s a wake-up call about how ageism prevails and shames women for growing older regardless of what she’s achieved in her life. Misogyny and ageism are the last accepted forms of discrimination. This book asks all the revenant questions and it should be required reading for our times.

Face

This book was full of thick truths! I will forever vow to hold my face higher and prouder regardless of societies misguided beliefs. I am beautiful to me and that is all that truly matters! Thank you for writing this book!

Love Justine!

I definitely have fallen into this, should i or shouldn't i, category for facial surgery or manipulation. I struggle like any older female in this messed up society, to look my best. To me, it's not about the looks, its the confidence that starts to wane over the years. I could relate to every story! It is truly sad how we have all become that wanna be poster child for perfection. This has opened my hooded eyes to what i need to do instead of what i want to do and that's just to live my fullest life, regardless of the wrinkles and sagging skin. Thank you for this Justine! Your performance kicked ass!!

Compelling and important

After listening to Justine Bateman’s book Fame I wanted to listen to Face. As a 65 year old male I am not the target audience—in neither gender nor age. Yet, this book is very meaningful and well written and an important mirror for how easy, cruel, and stupid it is to judge the visible symptoms associated with getting older and ignoring the far greater beauty—internally and externally—of aging. I have an Aunt who is 100 years old and she is truly more beautiful, in my opinion, than at any other time in her life. She has “twinkle wrinkles” and I hope that I (and everyone) can become so lucky. Men, especially, have a lot to learn from this book.

in a word? DAMN.

i don’t normally write reviews. but i cannot overstate how much this book spoke to me. i grew up watching (okay fine, idolizing) justine as mallory on family ties and have often wondered what she did with the rest of her life. quite a bit, as it turns out. this exploration is brutal, poignant, and deftly performed. i have to wonder if there is anyone more qualified to examine this topic, but it’s clear the author has done her research nonetheless. i look forward to the film adaptation of Face, and hope other women find this work as empowering as i did.

justine Bateman is a force to be reckoned with

When will women be judged for who they are? Justine recounts example after example of the hideous superficial value of beauty. Her writing has advanced in sophistication and technique since Fame. I eagerly look forward to her next book.

Aging Ain't for Sissies

If you didn't feel bad about aging before you read this, you most certainly will after. I love Justine Bateman and I loved the idea of this book. I'm also 53 years old and I've never felt bad about getting older, wiser, etc. While Justine has a great outlook to aging, this book is a collection of 46 stories of women and how they feel about aging. Some were positive, but a lot were negative and depressing as hell. I've never gone the needle route but I don't judge women who do, it's their choice. I also don't mind striving to look pretty, for myself (not others) and it comes across as a bad thing in this book.
