About this listen

Returning to Seattle after a business trip, retired PI Leo Waterman is shocked to find his girlfriend, Rebecca Duvall, unconscious on the bathroom floor, her house filled with gas. Officials believe it was a suicide attempt in the wake of a humiliating scandal. Under investigation for dereliction of duty, she'd been suspended from her job as medical examiner for King County. Leo knows Rebecca too well - and is determined to prove her innocence and clear her name. Most important, he wants to find out who tried to kill her.

Despite the prosecuting attorney's claims of a solid case, Leo rounds up his ragtag team of miscreants to find the truth. The investigation leads straight to The Highlands. There, behind the locked doors of one of Seattle's most exclusive gated communities, old money can afford to bury older family secrets. But for Leo, unearthing them is going to trap him in a conspiracy that is deadlier, and far more personal, than he feared.

Refreshingly light and fun suspense mystery

Family Values is Book 10 in the Leo Waterman mystery series by G. M. Ford. (Books 5 and 6 are unavailable at Audible.) The first novel in the series was released in 1995 and Family values was released this week. I'm addicted to the Leo Waterman series!

Leo was a private investigator until his 45th birthday when he finally was allowed access to his inheritance which his dad wisely stipulated in his will. He now takes on only the occasional case and that is usually when one of his friends is in trouble. In Family Values his girlfriend and Seattle's medical examiner is in trouble over missing files. He finds her when she is dying from a heroin overdose. She lives and she definitely did not administer the heroin herself.

Part of what makes this series is Leo's unlikely group of friends who help him. They are old and virtually homeless. The novels are written in the first person with Leo talking in his wise cracking style. The cases he works are deadly serious, but the fast moving novels are light and fun. Patrick Lawlor narrates perfectly as the voice of Leo Waterman,

I highly recommend Family Values and the other novels in the series. Be sure to buy them at Amazon using Whispersync for voice where the Kindle and Audible versions cost less than the Audible version alone. Those with Kindle Unlimited can borrow the Kindle and Audible v versions combined at no cost.

My favorite non-detective!

Another fun adventure from GM Ford. Leo and his gang of misfits succeed in bringing the bad guys to justice in their non conventional, sometimes bungling, ways. May Leo keep riding to the rescue for years to come!

Very entertaining

I’ve read several books from the Leo Waterman series and enjoyed them. This is the second recorded version of a book in the series I’ve listened to. Patrick Lawlor has created a mental picture of Leo different from the one I’d created in my mind from my previous reading. I like Lawlor’s spin on the character just fine. This book was particularly well crafted, I thought. I recommend the series.

Won't listen to this author again

I gave this book a fair try, thinking it would get better. I finally had to bail on it. The story had potential, but is ultimately boring, mundane, and really not for me. I prefer a story that's hard to step away from, and this one was hard to pay attention to.
