Publisher's summary

Spur-Award winning author Elmer Kelton delivers the sequel to his novel Slaughter with this powerful story of one man's search for peace on the war-stricken plains of the Wild West.

In The Far Canyon, Kelton masterfully unveils for his listener the finality of the buffalo’s demise, the beginning of a time when cattle would replace the American bison on the Southern plains and ultimately end the Plains Indian culture. The novel reveals the history of the period, not in a general grand swoop of the pen, but rather, up close and personal, so his listeners can judge the impact of the period upon his characters.

A Most Original Western Tale

I listened to the ‘Far Canyon’ during what would have been a long and arduous overseas flight. The story quickly gained my interest thanks to its’ many interesting characters, along with excellent narration by George Guidall. In the story, Elmer Kelton expresses the feelings and emotions of the pioneers, who are moving west in search of land and opportunity. At the same time, he does the same for members of the Comanche tribes, whose lands, lives, and culture are being taken from them. The story, for me, was quite insightful and thought provoking. Of course, as in every Western, there’s a bad guy who reappears throughout the story. I regretted reaching the end of the ‘Far Canyon’, as its’ characters stuck with me. It was a most enjoyable audiobook.

Great story!

Another wonderful story by Elmer Kelton and perfect narration by George Guidall! Wish the ending was a little more detailed but still worth the read.

A new fan of Western Novels

I am a newbie on listening to Westerns. What I have been missing !!! George Guidall (the reader) does Wonderfull justice to this book and brings characters to life . I loved listening to his voice as much as the novel . Its a beautiful unfolding of how the buffalo were hunted down and replaced with cattle. I never thought of that time capsule but now I understand with the bittersweet progress that built the west. The buffalo and the Indians lost their way of life as white men came along and its a painful read at times but the rewards of this novel are great. I am on to my next Elmer Kelton novel.

Great listen

I really enjoyed this story but it left a little short on the closure to then go into another book. Hopefully some of the other lesser roll characters will be expanded upon as his would make a great series starter.

better than the first!

This was written as a sequel to Slaughter, which I enjoyed but felt fairly neutral about it.
the main benefit was since I had also listened to the first book I felt like I had more insight on the characters.
I think this story carries enough of its own weight that it would also work as its own standalone.
I liked this better than the first book. I enjoyed the characters an events that brought this all together.

After Slaughter

Good continuation of the lives of the characters. Evolution and growth occurs and we learn much more about them. Not as good as the first book IMO. Ending is in line with the others, leaves much to your imagination. Im glad I listened to this book.

Maybe my favorite Elmer Kelton book . George Guidall is a top notch narrator and another favorite. His character voices just bring them alive. Well worth listening to.

Epilogue ???

This second book I have listened to that desperately needs a more complete ending or at least an epilogue. To much left hanging
