About this listen

A classic, the Russian masterpiece by Turgenev, held as one of the greatest works of 19th Century fiction. The novel is thought of as a response to the growing cultural divide and alienation between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the rapidly growing nihilist movement. These two philosophies were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's greatness lay in its traditional spirituality...

The main characters are a reflection of a youthful rebellious and anarchistic thought, therefore confronted with their traditional fathers. The character of Bazarov, nasty and anarchistic, remains one of the great creations of the literary world.©2018 Audioliterature (P)2018 Audioliterature

This is my first Ivan Turgenev novels. The dialogue needs a better narrator to bring its essence forward.

amazing story but needs a better narrator

Turgenev is one of the greatest of the Russian writers, and that is saying a lot given the many great writers. That said, this narration lacks in every way. The editing is reasonable. At the beginning of each chapter he gives a long title, which is very distracting. The characters are not well delineated. It is possible to listen to this, but the narration does distract from the story, which is sad.

Great Turgenev, but needs another narrator

Perhaps the translation is the problem, but I felt the narrator was inadequate. He has a sarcastic edge to his voice and doesn’t interpret the reading to keep you interested. It’s almost a monotone.
