Critic reviews

"[Narrator Robin] Miles offers a steady pace - not too slow, not too fast. Her tone is as insightful and poignant as the author's content. Both women take listeners through a historical and present-day journey that conveys the importance of embracing feminism." (AudioFile)

Everybody should read this book. bell hooks does an excellent job making feminist theory accessible and relatable to anybody.

I have loved Robin Miles narration since listening to The Broken Earth Trilogy.

Sadly, 25 years after the book's publication, I can't say we're any closer to being free of sexism and male domination. It feels like we're worse off than we were then.

Everybody Should Read/Listen to This Book

This was a great introduction to feminism for me (29 y/o M). There were many eye opening revelations, from historical accounts of how racism was present in the movement, to the many examples of how the patriarchy negatively affects men.

I sometimes felt like arguments and trains of thought were not laid out in an easy way to follow, though a second listen will likely make it easier.

The narrator was impeccable. She delivered with such feeling that I kept believing that she was the author herself.

Lots to learn

Hope they fix the edition of this Amazing book , Audible.
The Content needs descriptions and the chapters are wrongly numbered.
This is one of the most important feminist writers: would be important to take care of the work presentation.

She did such a great job explaining feminism. I’ve been a woman’s advocate for as long as I can remember, but understanding how to be a feminist as a man can be challenging. She gave me so much to think about that I can apply to my life and ways to grow and improve myself. The idea that anyone should be dominating anyone else unless it’s consensual is alien to me.

So helpful and inspiring

This piece of academia by the pate great bell hooks helps women and men understand the complexities of feminism and how it’s not just beneficial for women, but for men as well. It’s not anti-male in the slightest. It actually criticizes those anti-male feminists as much as those who want to maintain the patriarchy. Highly recommend!
