Publisher's summary

What are we fighting for?

"I’m an evangelical Christian. And I’m not Amish, Quaker, or Mennonite. I own several guns and still believe that the smell of a recently fired shotgun on a crisp fall morning comes darn near close to paradise. But I’ve tried my hardest to understand God’s Word and the diverse perspectives of those who read it. And the more I study, the more I discuss, the more I’ve become convinced: Christians shouldn’t kill or use violence - not even in war."

With these words, Preston Sprinkle jumps into a compelling, passionate study of God’s perspective on violence. Examining both the seemingly angry, violent God of the Old Testament and the peacemaking Jesus of the New, Preston takes us back to Scripture to discern how God has really called His people to think and live in the midst of a violent world. He asks us to join him in inviting God to challenge our presuppositions, to set aside our biases and backgrounds and fears...and to seek above all else to faithfully follow the Savior who humbly submitted to God in the face of injustice and violence.

Critic reviews

"I highly recommend that every believer examine the truths in this book. You may discover that much of your current belief system has been influenced by sources other than Scripture." (Francis Chan, New York Times best-selling author of Crazy Love, Forgotten God, and Erasing Hell

Thought Provoking

Even though I thought I knew what it meant to be a pacifist, I appreciate the Biblical perspective presented in this book. It was simple, to the point and not so convoluted that one could not identify or understand. Thanks so much for a great book!

Very thought provoking

While I am still on the fence about his overall conclusion, the book was definitely worth the read and gave me much to think about. It was eye-opening, sobering, frightening, and inspiring.

Life changing!

This book is the best apologetic for Christians to embrace non-violemce as a way of life that I have ever read.

A Needed Challenge

In typical fashion, Preston Sprinkle takes a deep dive into a controversial topic, and does so compassionately. With grace and truth, he challenges his audience to view war through a theological (rather than political) lens. Most importantly, whether you agree with his position or not, he presents a strong biblical case for nonviolence. For Sprinkle, nonviolence goes hand-in-hand with following Jesus, the “Cruciform King.”

Compelling and life changing

This book completely changed my perspective on God and his feelings towards violence - specifically with respect to self defense and war. I grew up in the typical Republican household where we believed that every Bible believing citizen should own a gun (even better if you have more than one) and where Christians should be on the front lines advocating for war, especially when our country has been hurt or threatened by another country or group of people. I remember 9/11 well - my family and I sat in front of the television while former President George Bush promised that we would avenge the deaths of all of those who lost their lives on that tragic day... I remember feeling proud and hopeful that we were going to “take them out”. Fast forward to 2009 when I came to know Jesus and very slowly my perspectives on life began to change. From then until now I really didn’t know where to stand on gun ownership and self defense but a large part of me still felt I should keep my gun “just in case” a man entered my house and tried to hurt me. Wow, how misguided my thinking was. Christians today are nothing like they were in the years around and after Jesus. I am astounded that it has taken me 35 years of living to finally hear teaching about Scripture that is accurate and makes sense. I used to always say I could never believe in a God who orders that children be killed, who created hell simply to make people suffer for all eternity (news flash to me - I just learned that hell was never in the creation story... quite an interesting thought to think that God in fact may not have created what we call hell after all). This book has completely changed my view of God and I am incredibly thankful to the author for researching all of the information out there and writing this book. I truly believe he will never begin to realize how many lives he has changed by writing it. Thank you, Preston, for doing what so many of us are unable to and for bringing the truth of the Scriptures to so many who are longing so desperately to know it. Everyone should read this book.

life changing concept and information

I started realizing that Christians don't behave any differently than pagans where violence is concerned. This book helped me sort it out according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. I'm tired of fighting (war) and this is giving my soul a peace I have never had before. Jesus said, I will give you peace and now I'm getting closer to that state. Peace that transcends all understanding comes from a choice to be NON VIOLENT. I will be promoting this peace for the rest of my earthly life and beyond.

Truth is rarely accepted

The most underrated verse in the Bible talks about loving your enemies. Most hate their enemies. It’s good to see what the Bible really says about this.

Must Read for Conservative Christians

This book has completely flipped my mindset when it comes to war and guns. It provides an incredible break down of many arguments with an immense amount of biblical evidence and cultural context. I am now fully onboard with God’s non-violence focus.
