About this listen

Winner of the 2022 American Book Fest's Best Book Award: Religion, Christianity

Throughout Holy Week, two competing approaches to peacemaking collide. What if we've embraced the wrong one?

At the start of Holy Week, tears streamed down Jesus' face as he cried out, "If only you knew the things that make for peace." From that moment, until a week later when he triumphantly declared, "Peace be with you," Jesus spent each day confronting injustice, calling out oppressors, and contending for peace.

But what if—despite all our familiarity with the events of Holy Week—we still don't know how Jesus makes peace? And what if—despite clinging to the cross of Christ for our salvation—we've actually embraced a different approach to peacemaking? One that justifies killing enemies. One whose methods include nailing criminals to crosses.

We desperately need to recover the radical vision of peacemaking that Jesus embodied throughout Holy Week. And we urgently need to be trained in his way of making peace. So, come. Let's journey together day-by-day through Jesus' final week and discover anew why he is called the Prince of Peace.

What Jesus was really saying

If there’s only one book you read this year, it should be this one. This time during the Lenten season, it is very appropriate to review what Jesus really accomplished during holy week. I am a prolific reader of many books. This one is beyond recommendation, it changes everything, if we would only consider it, we would change our way of thinking and relating to other people.

Not Just for Easter...

This has been one of the best books I've read in a very long time. If we fail to understand with a storied approach to scripture, we miss the inspiration and incarnation of the text for our time. With this book, there's no chance you'll miss anything. You will gain understanding and insights that will feel fresh and anew. They are in fact the results of obvious diligence on the part of the author and the scholars that have helped him along his journey. We need books like this one to set ablaze once again the hearts and minds of Christians of all stripes and awaken the precious, inspiring, faithfilled truths of our most sacred of holidays in the church. May this book bring a newness and life to our Blessed Hope. Thank you Jason for writing this book and please write more.

A Tremendous Read that Taught me Much About Jesus

Porterfield does an incredible job in this book of laying out how Jesus actually worked for peace during the most tumultuous time of his life, Holy Week. He upends common but untrue tropes about Jesus and violence, all while pushing forth a thoroughly biblical perspective of who Jesus was and how he interacted with ideas of violence. This is a spectacular read, and well worth your time if you find yourself wondering how a peaceful Savior could coincide with the terrible things he endured during Holy Week.

The narrator does a good job of reading in a compelling way and keeping the flow of the stories and information Porterfield is sharing going.

Jesus non-violence inspiring

loved the details about scripture, linking to current life challenges. Jesus "whip" clearing the temple of ripoff money changers was really just a handful of reeds. he didn't whip people, just drove out the animals.

Enlightening

This was such a thought provoking book causing me to really rethink my cultural Christianity when we hold up a mirror to it in light of the scripture of Holy Week.

Five Hours to A New Perspective

Listening to "Fight Like Jesus" may just change your mind about the use of power in the Gospel narratives about Jesus during Holy Week. Believers in the majority of churches hear sermons on the palms, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus every year. Still there is more to consider when we read through the events leading to the cross. What does it mean that Jesus cursed a fig tree, cleansed the temple, and proclaimed woe to the religious leaders? Could it be that underneath what we interpret as judgment and destruction are love and mercy in disguise? Jason Porterfield answers these questions by looking at the stories in their context, examining clues in the original language, and bringing in perspectives of biblical scholars and theologians.

Walk through Holy Week day by day and gain new perspective--a view that brings hope--on God's love for all of us!
