About this listen

A land ravaged by war without end. Cities gutted by weapons of mass destruction. Countries laid waste by biological warfare. Governments ruined by greed, violence, and corruption.

This is a world in the throes of economic decay and at the mercy of terrorists. This is Asia. This is Europe. This is America. This is Final Blackout.

Across this devastated, post-apocalyptic landscape marches one extraordinary soldier and his band of brothers. He is the Lieutenant, a hardened military strategist and a charismatic leader of men. The narrow-minded high command may have relieved the Lieutenant of duty, but not of his honor - and his crack unit of warriors remains fiercely loyal to him.

Now, in a time of deception, desperation, and betrayal, they are headed into the ultimate battle against the ultimate enemy - their own treacherous leaders. But for the Lieutenant, a hero at the crossroads of history, it is time to do what is best for his country and for his men - to undertake one last act of courage and sacrifice...the Final Blackout.

"As perfect a piece of science fiction as has ever been written." (Robert A. Heinlein)

"Compelling...riveting... Hubbard's best." (Publishers Weekly)

A Fair Read

Probably more profound when it was first published. Not earth shaking something to read when waiting at an airport and want to pass time.

Abridged

I have read the book many times. I would have liked a warning that this was an abridged version of the book.

I liked this book

I really like some of the readings by Roddy McDowall and one of my favorites is his reading of Ole Doc Methuselah.

He also reads this book as well and does a good job. (It incorrectly says Bruce Boxleitner)

Final Blackout is a master piece!

I read it 2 decades ago, and decided to listen to it anew.
What a brilliant description of what a commander ought to be and do.
In those days of uncertainty, when government leaders are all about self power and blood shedding, this book is highly recommended :-)

Excellent story!

This is honestly one of the top short stories I have read. I have read it several times over the years and it just keeps getting better. This is truly a quality piece of literature for a man of any age, and women too!

A nice surprise

I was surprised that I liked this story as much as I did. I orginally bought it as a gift, but then listened and enjoyed it very much. This is ultimately a book of loyalty, love and character in the face of cowardice at the highest level of government. As important today as when it was written.
