About this listen

In the gripping conclusion to the action-packed "standard bearer" of zombie series, the threat of death is given new life. Benny Imura and his friends have found the jet and Sanctuary - but neither is what they expected. Instead of a refuge, Sanctuary is a hospice, and the soldiers who flew the plane seem to be little more than bureaucrats who have given up hope for humanity's future. With Chong hovering between life and death, clinging to his humanity by a thread, Benny makes a startling discovery: a scientist may have discovered a cure for the zombie plague. Desperate to save Chong, Benny and his friends mount a search and rescue mission. But they're not the only ones on the hunt. The reapers are after the cure too, and they want to use it turn all the zombies into superfast shock troops - and wipe humanity off the face of the earth. In this riveting conclusion to the Rot & Ruin series, the battle to end all battles is just beginning.

Overall, this series was worth my time and I hope, at the end, you find it to be worth yours. The mental gymnastics of what sacrifice, bravery, and honor truly looks like and their individual costs are brilliantly dissected and fleshed out throughout this series, finishing strikingly with this last book. In many ways, these books struck me harder at the core and gave me philosophical soul food in a way that no other series has in a very long time. While I do have my griefs with Mayberry and plot holes and incomplete thoughts littered all throughout the four books, I'd give this book a solid 9/10 with the full series an 8/10 (the 3rd book almost lost me, but I'm glad I managed to plowed through). Though bittersweet, the ending neatly tied up most of the loose threads littered throughout the series and it ended on a very satisfying note and no real need for a sequel. One personal note I will add is that, book by book, the themes get progressively darker and more religiously philosophical (especially book 3). I'm not sure I'd ever recommend this series to anyone younger than 14... and that honestly still feels too young for me.

tldr; This series is worth your time. Lots of food for thought and a mostly well rounded series. Not for kids under 14.

Fantastic book - redeemed the series for me!

i wasn’t sure i could make it through another in the series, which is solid zombie fare. while the trope feels done to death by number 4, the pull of following joe and grim just a bit further was too much to let go. so glad i did. this was the best of the bunch. the zealots were feeling overdone, but this book actually pulls it all together in the best ways. go for it! great read.

almost skipped it, so glad i didn’t.

Next: Bits and Pieces, Broken Lands series, The ones with Dez Fox on first night (I can't think of the name right now..lol) and of course, All the Joe Ledger series. All good. All tied in to this same story. I love them all! Maberry rules. As does Ray Porter, this narrator. Enjoy!

Wonderful, as always!

If you’ve made it this far, give it a chance. You won’t regret it. Just know, it’s the rot and ruin. Set your expectations accordingly.

This book made me love and loathe the entire series.

A very good listen. I am running out of Mayberry stories to listen to. Sad times.

Loved the realized growth and development in Benny and Nix. A very satisfying ending to the story.

An amazing pleasing ending to 4 books of a story!

Jonathan Maberry books are a must!!!if you enjoy zombie books then you Have to know his name. I'd start with the Ledger Books, then hit the Dez Fox Night books THEN read this series. Trust me on this. It's sooo worth it..You'll appreciate how [he] weaves characters from other series together to give you a feeling of having a unique perspective that only few could have

Bravo for the tip of the hat to a much loved Zombie show..."Quick draw Carl...son of the famous Sherriff Rick 😉"
The narrator is excellent (although no one beats R C Bray) but this guy is great

Another Maberry Must Read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

While all of the books in this series are entertaining, this one demonstrates the best storytelling. I highly recommend it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Benny, the protagonist, holds the spotlight in this novel, with his growth as a person and a warrior coming to logical fruition.

What about Brian Hutchison’s performance did you like?

As with the other books in this series, Hutchinson's performance was excellent.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Death comes for us all.
