When the memoirs of Sir Harry Flashman, the notorious Victorian soldier and scoundrel, first came to light 30 years ago, it was finally revealed what had become of the infamous bully who had darkened Tom Brown's school days. Now, three new episodes in the career of this eminently disreputable adventurer place us at the center of pivotal historical events - the attempted assassination of Emperor Franz Josef in the 1880s, the Prince of Wales's involvement in the Tranby Croft gambling scandal, and the military disaster at Rorke's Drift in South Africa - as the aging but agile Flashy is pitted against one of the greatest villains of his day.

Thrown into contact with assorted grand royalty and even grander tarts, he must test his wits against political heavyweights, including Bismarck, as he becomes eyewitness to the uncensored truth about two of the greatest heroes of his time.

I've been reading Flashman since the '80s. He's a canny old reprobate with advantageous talents. He's lived through nearly every military engagement since Tom Brown's School Days on every continent. I've learned more history from Fraser than my teachers. Fraser has Flashman down to a science (fabulous characterization) and so does David Case. Mr Case portrays men and women of several nationalities flawlessly. Listeners beware: this material was written about a time when cultural and social mores were completely different than now. Still, this presentation is well worth a credit.

… Because the books are ones to be read again and again… And certainly David cases delivery is unparalleled. What a combination. Humor, history and eloquence all wrapped up in one, not my favorite of the series, but that’s like saying I prefer Tom Sawyer to Huck Finn. George McDonald Fraser is a master.

George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman series is like Ian Fleming's James Bond series, only better. He reminds me in some ways of Kipling in his story telling ability. It is a pleasure listening to the way Fraser can take a simple incident and present it with elegance, suspense and humor. And David Case's reading complements this perfectly.

Three more adventures in the chronicles of Flashman. While these portray him in his later years, his essential character is unchanged - which should be celebrated by all Flashman enthusiasts.

I am a huge fan of all things Flashman, I have the entire series in both print and from Books on Tape. This is probably my least favorite book of the series and it is unfortunate that this is the only selection avaialbe from Audible, its not a bad book by any means, it just is not the strongest of the series. David Case IS Flashman- he has done a splendid job with all of the readings. I look forward to the balance of the series being added to the Audible Library! I also acquired this book as a tape from Books on Tape and the tape quality was poor- the Audible version is better.

This was the last of the series and a fitting conclusion to many hours of pleasure. David Case is a star worth following.

I've read/listed to several Flashman books and this is by far his weakest. Three unrelated stories none of which are very good. The narrator who reads the other Flashman books does a better job than David Case. Can't really recommend it.

A worthy addition to the Flashman opus- though not the best starting place for newcomers to this series. Readers who love Sharpe will adore Flashie. Fraser offers a rollicking romp through history through Flashman's wonderfully jaundiced eyes. Irreverent, poignant, factual, bawdy, action-packed-- these books are a find.

I hope Audible will offer all the Flashman books so readers can start at the beginning. If not, read the others first, then enjoy this audiobook for dessert. David Case (aka Frederick Davidson) is the perfect reader.

More Flashman Please

If you have some sense of history and enjoy reading it you will love this book. David Case's narration is the best. Flashy is the hero that most of us would chose to be not the damned fool who goes willingly to confront danger. One hopes that the rest of this great series is added to Audible's catalogue.
