About this listen

When former forensic photographer Miranda Rhoads moves to the seaside town of Lost Beach, she decides to make her living as a wildlife photographer, putting crime scenes behind her. But her plans are quickly upended when she comes across a couple sleeping in a canoe, entwined in an embrace. Looking closer, she realizes the man and woman aren't asleep - they’ve been murdered.

Detective Joel Breda sets out to find answers - not only about the unidentified victims in the marshy death scene but also about the aloof and beautiful photographer who seems to know more about his investigation than he does.

As they begin to unravel the motivation of a merciless serial killer, Miranda and Joel must race against the clock to make an arrest before the killer finds them first.

Worth the sale price. Good story.

I really enjoyed the story overall. Narration was good. Minus 2 stars for repetitive sex scenes. Not my jam. For me it took away from the seriousness of the entire story. And it seemed the sex scenes were all exactly the same: graphic descriptions followed by regret. Overall I enjoyed the mystery and characters.

Small Town, Workplace, Romantic Suspense

Romantic suspense and small town are the recipe for a great book, at least for me, and this one is no exception. Miranda and Joel were intriguing characters investigating a case that had me guessing till the big reveal on who the culprit was. Laura Griffin has a great writing style that makes is very easy to become invested in the story and the characters she writes are a great example of that.

Miranda Rhoads, a former forensic photographer turner nature photographer is out working early one morning when she comes across what appear to be a sleeping couple in a canoe. However, the closer she gets she realizes they aren't sleeping. Lead detective on the case, Joel Breda, is immediately intrigued by Miranda, an eyewitness who appears to be completely collected after finding a dead couple. Of course, upon closer examination, she might not be as unaffected by what's she's seen as he thought. And when the department is in desperate need of forensic help and the bodies keep piling up, Joel and Miranda will need to work together to solve the case.

I really enjoyed how the relationship between Miranda and Joel developed and the way they worked together throughout the case. I love that Joel was completely open to Miranda's thoughts and opinions and I love the way he wanted to protect her throughout. The pacing of the entire book worked really well for me and the way Miranda's backstory was revealed was done really well. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series and more from this author.

This is one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the following.

✔️ Workplace Romance
✔️ Small Town
✔️ Mystery/Suspense
✔️ Law Enforcement Hero
✔️ Protective Hero
✔️ Third Person POV

A good mystery that remained unsolved until the end. The narration is excellent with a pleasant voice.

Not my favorite narration

I love all of Laura Griffins books. This one was good but sometimes too sappy. I enjoyed the story and plot but the narration wasn't my favorite.

Not my vibe

I liked the first novel in the series better. For me this was too relationship/romance driven & didn’t follow the story of the investigation well. It was more of a romance novel with a “mystery” as a side storyline. This series had some potential for me & I wanted to like to novel, alas, Texas murder files should be renamed to Texas Romance with a hint of murder.

Sappy love story interferes with mystery

I was looking for a new series, but this isn't it. The love story interferes with the pace of the mystery. I had to skip chapters to avoid listening to it.
