About this listen

"Dick skillfully explores the psychological ramifications of this nightmare." - The New York Times Review of Books

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said grapples with many of the themes Philip K. Dick is best known for - identity, altered reality, drug use, and dystopia - in a rollicking chase story that earned the novel the John W. Campbell Award and nominations for the Hugo and Nebula.

Jason Taverner - world-famous talk show host and man-about-town - wakes up one day to find that no one knows who he is - including the vast databases of the totalitarian government. And in a society where lack of identification is a crime, Taverner has no choice but to go on the run with a host of shady characters, including crooked cops and dealers of alien drugs. But do they know more than they are letting on? And just how can a person's identity be erased overnight?

PKD Did Not Channel The Book of Acts

I purchased and read this book to test the theory that PKD channelled the Book of Acts in the Black Man Gas Station scene. Before reading Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, I re-read the Book of Acts twice. I see no connection. In my opinion, the theory is now debunked. On the whole, it was a waste of time and energy to read FMT, TPS, but richly rewarding to re-read the Book of Acts. So be it.

Great Performance

The book is performed well. You may not love how the story ends. The transitory effects and explanation are weak.

Ok book

Dick has an issue with long stories.
There is a bunch of irrelevant things going on that dont add to the stories and serve the purpose of filling in.
If it was a short story it would be good. Now its not.
Its the third long story that I do not enjoy while i love his short ones. I am just listening to vol2 and its a thrill - love the humor and irony

Don't let the awards fool you

What did you like best about Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said? What did you like least?

The women were portrayed as sex-hungry and shallow.

What aspect of Phil Gigante’s performance would you have changed?

His portrayal of women's voices.

Any additional comments?

According to Wikipedia, this book was published after a hiatus of PKD from writing, during which time his older works became quite popular. IMHO this book got the awards as an afterglow of that.

Excellently Maddening Psy-Fi Thriller

Wonderfully paced, perfectly written. Performance is killer. May be an earlier work from Dick, does have that feel but thoroughly enjoyable and criminally under-known.

very PKD, engaging read

narrator is on point. he understands PKD. the story ties together a lot of PKSs favorite topics including psychedelics, consciousness, reality, dystopian police state. entertaining read with a good ount to mull over

PKD Doesn't Trust the Pols…

This was a pretty interesting read and the narrator did a fantastic job. The story is full of twists and turns and just as you think you have it all figured out, Dick flip-flops on you and takes you down another path. The characters are well developed and feel real. You may not like them, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t serve their purposes fully. My biggest complaint would be the way he ended it. I felt like I was reading the end subtitles of a movie where you find out what happened to each character after the close of the book. Dick even goes on to tell you what happened to some of the inanimate objects and their “lives” after the story is done, which was absurd. I felt like this wasn’t needed, but overall I enjoyed the novel.

Not the best production

Lots of mispronunciation

Felt like the story itself was disjointed and incoherent.

Not my favorite Dick novel.

Performance enhances story

There are several transcendent moments in this story... but overall it's imperfect and leaves the ultimate meaning up to the reader. Not the perfect introduction to Dick's writing, but strongly recommended to any fans looking to chew on some difficult ideas
